Basterebbe la sola "In The Sun", la canzone d'apertura, a giustificare l'acclamazione della critica (tra i migliori dieci album del 2000 secondo varie riviste specializzate), all'uscita di Come To Where I'm From, il secondo disco di Joseph Arthur.
In effetti, questa opening track è la sintesi di quello che è la perfezione musicale: gran melodia, testo poetico e profondo, un arrangiamento sublime con gli archi che entrano al punto giusto per dare un tono drammatico all'atmosfera mentre l'interpretazione vocale di Arthur è struggente come non mai.
Basterebbe questa sola canzone a rendere eccellente qualsiasi disco, ma Arthur è un songwriter di razza e cosí non si accontenta di scrivere solo un capolavoro, ma semina tutto l'album di canzoni dalla bellezza tagliante e dal fascino morboso.
Così passiamo dall'inquietudine di "Invisibile Hands" alla ballata malata e paranoica di "Ashes Everywhere", dalla follia di "Creation Or A Stain" al folk deviato di "Cockroach", per citarne solo alcune.
Ciò che rende incredibilmente incantevoli queste canzoni è soprattutto la scelta del tipo di suono che incombe per tutto il lavoro. Un suono denso ed oscuro, che nasce dalla sperimentazione ma che per un percorso inverso e strano sembra arrivare sino al folk e al country delle radici.
Le liriche dell'album non sono altro che una lunga autoanalisi dove l'autore mette in gioco le sue paure e, come un esorcista fa con le preghiere, Arthur combatte i propri demoni con le canzoni, fino ad arrivare alla luce glaciale (non salvifica) dell'ammaliante "Speed of Light".
Se ogni disco si potesse paragonare ad un film, questo allora sarebbe un film di Ingmar Bergman, probabilmente "L'ora del Lupo". In quel film c'era un tramonto e c'era una alba (anche se fredda e sconsolata), in mezzo un lungo viaggio da incubo nel cuore della notte e del subconscio, proprio quello che succede in Come To Where I'm From.
