Dopo il cambio di stile operato con "Infinity" ed "Evolution", è con "Departure" che i Journey fanno ingresso negli anni 80, periodo che li consacrerà in eterno nella scena dell'AOR e che li vedrà diventare una della band più famose e apprezzate degli USA.
Dopo che il batterista storico Anysley Dunbar aveva già lasciato la band prima del precedente "Evolution", questo "Departure" presenta per l'ultima volta alle tastiere Gregg Rolie, che abbandonerà in seguito al tour di quest'album, proponendo alla band quello che poi sarà il suo successore, Jonathan Cain, che contribuirà a consegnare il gruppo alla leggenda suonando le note di canzoni come "Don't Stop Believin' ", "Open Arms" e "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)".
L'album continua la strada intrapresa con "Infinity" ed "Evolution", e rimane ancora legato al rock tendente all'hard dei lavori precedenti, anche se la produzione risulta più curata, e le canzoni sembrano seguire degli schemi precisi e maggiormente studiati, con minore spazio all'improvvisazione; elementi che anticiperanno la svolta più mainstream e pop di "Escape" e soprattutto di "Fontiers" e "Raised On Radio". Inoltre vengono quasi del tutto messi da parte gli splendidi intrecci vocali tra Greg Rolie e Steve Perry, che avevano regalato perle indimenticabili come "Feeling That Way" e "Anytime" (da "Infinity") o "Just The Same Way" (da "Evolution").
In apertura troviamo subito uno degli episodi più riusciti del disco, "Any Way You Want It", canzone trascinante e dal ritornello vincente, che fu, insieme a "Lights " e "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", uno dei singoli che contribuirono maggiormente al successo dei Journey, prima della consacrazione di "Escape"; e non mancano anche altri brani più legati all'hard rock, che ci riportano direttamente alle atmosfere di "Infinity": passando per la più anonima "Where Were You", per arrivare alle scoppiettanti "Line Of Fire" e "Homemade Love", con Neal Schon sugli scudi ad impreziosirle con assoli pirotecnici degni della sua bravura; mentre reminescenze bluesly sono ancora avvertibili in "Walks Like A Lady". Refrain sognanti e ariose melodie caratterizzano invece "Someday Soon", "Precious Time" e la bellissima "People And Places", song più lunga ed elaborata, che è anche uno degli episodi più brillanti del disco, grazie ai suoi meravigliosi cambi di tempo che lasciano la canzone a metà tra momenti distesi e sognanti e riff più tirati e rock. Addirittura una doppia intro, la strumentale e psichedelica title track e la breve e dolcissima "Good Morning Girl", che fugge via portandosi dietro una delle più intense prestazioni vocali di Steve Perry, per preparare la stada e lasciare spazio alla canzone più bella del disco, "Stay Awhile", ballata profonda e romantica, ma che riesce a non essere eccessivamente lenta o scontata, dove Steve Perry raggiunge delle vette altissime, e Gregg Rolie dà l'addio alla band dipingendo le dolci noti di piano di questa canzone indimenticabile, con un'ultima strofa davvero da lacrime.
Con "Departure" i Journey fanno le prove generali prima dei grandi successi che li aspetteranno da lì a pochissimi anni, ma non prima di aver regalato ai fans la splendida testimonianza live di "Captured" registrato durante il tour di questo disco, che mostra la faccia del gruppo che più ho amato e porto nel cuore. Poi arriverà il trittico di "Escape" (1981), "Frontiers" (1983) e "Raised On Radio" (1986), che stamperà per sempre nella storia del rock made in USA il nome di un gruppo che ha saputo scrivere perle capaci di far sognare l'America di quegli anni, grazie alla loro classe immensa e soprattutto a una delle voci più più belle del rock, quella di Steve Perry, peccato che oggi non suoni più con loro.
