1986: un anno decisamente importante per l'AOR, durante il quale sono stati pubblicati lavori importantissimi e soprattutto meravigliosi per quanto riguarda questo genere. Si possono citare a tal proposito i vari Back To The Streets dei christian rockers Petra, o When Seconds Count dei Survivor, tra gli artisti più importanti per quanto riguarda l'AOR, così come i Toto che in quell'anno fanno uscire lo splendido Fahreneit (tra gli album più sottovalutati di sempre a mio parere, per il solo fatto di essere situato tra due capolavori come Isolation del 1984 e The Seventh One del 1988), o ancora A Matter Of Attitude dei Fate, The Sport Of Kings dei Triumph, The Final Countdown degli Europe e mille altri. Tutti album apparentemente insuperabili, e tutti da massimo dei voti, eppure, incredibile ma vero, c'è stato un disco capace di superare (e non con poco distacco) tutti questi: Raised On Radio dei Journey.
Questo lavoro leggendario è stato in grado di superare tutti gli altri album sopracitati, ma (naturalmente a mio modestissimo parere) anche due dischi enormi come Escape (1981) e Frontiers (1983), che rappresentavano praticamente la perfezione nell'AOR e sono ancora indicati come due capisaldi del genere.
I superlativi si sprecano con questo album, ma non esistono parole in grado di rendere appieno la sua bellezza, le sue sfumature, l'atmosfera che si respira mentre lo si ascolta, quindi l'unica cosa da fare è inserire Raised On Radio nello stereo per venire travolti dall'impatto altamente emotivo dell'opener "Girl Can't Help It", validissima rappresentante dello stile dell'album: predominanza di tastiere (qui Jonathan Cain svolge un lavoro formidabile, probabilmente la migliore prestazione della sua carriera), atmosfere che coinvolgono l'ascoltatore in una spirale di emozioni e soprattutto un tocco di malinconia che rende lo stile di questo disco inconfondibile.
La successiva "Positive Touch" (palesemente influenzata dai Toto), dal ritmo assolutamente irresistibile, sembra essere più allegra e vigorosa della precedente, ma dopo un certo numero di ascolti si riesce a cogliere (specialmente nell'ottimo assolo di sax finale) la velata malinconia di cui si parlava prima, che arricchisce notevolmente il pezzo.
Dopo la bellissima "Suzanne" si presenta la più grande hit di questo Raised On Radio: "Be Good To Yourself", dai toni decisamente più solari e divertenti rispetto al resto dell'album; ciò la fa sembrare un po' distaccata dalle altre canzoni, con le quali però si sposa perfettamente, non stonando affatto all'interno del disco. "Once You Love Somebody" è caratterizzata da una ritmica molto funky e dal suo incedere cadenzato, quasi sofferto, invece "Happy To Give" è una delicata e bellissima ballad, con un Jonathan Cain che con le sue tastiere riesce a ricreare scenari suggestivi, fantastici, addirittura irreali.
Le atmosfere vengono ancora una volta alleggerite con la frizzante ed energica title track, tanto breve quanto incisiva, contenente un assolo corto ma molto intenso e coinvolgente di Neal Schon ed una grande prova di Steve Perry, come al solito molto espressivo, mentre "I'll Be Alright Without You" e "It Could Have Been You" sono due splendidi pezzi in cui ritorna incombente l'ombra dei Toto, pur mantenendo una propria originalità.
Ci avviamo verso la fine dell'album, e troviamo quella che è per me una delle canzoni più belle della storia della musica, "The Eyes Of A Woman". Uno Steve Perry al massimo dell'espressività e soprattutto un Jonathan Cain che ancora una volta tesse trame immaginarie e costruisce atmosfere eteree e malinconiche rendono questa canzone un capolavoro, un turbine di sentimenti ed emozioni destinato a scuotere l'animo dell'ascoltatore. La chiusura è affidata all'intensa ballad "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever", che già dal titolo lascia intravedere lampi di passione bruciante che scaturiscono da ogni suo minimo particolare.
Uno degli album più belli della musica tutta, anche se è sicuramente da massimo dei voti la sua qualità probabilmente sarà anche stata superata da altri lavori, ma fidatevi, quando ascolterete (sempre che non l'abbiate già fatto) questo Raised On Radio vi renderete subito conto che la sua magia riuscirà a donarvi emozioni che nessun'altra cosa esistente sulla Terra riuscirà a suscitarvi.
