I Justice mi fecero rivalutare la dance. La loro carica sprigionata dall'alternanza imponente di tastiere, bassi distorti e batterie martellanti, che ad un primo rapido ascolto mi sembrarono ostici, mi coinvolsero come un pogo ad un concerto metal.
Le versioni remixate dall'album live A Cross the Universe confermarono le mie impressioni. Per chi non lo sapesse, i Justice sono un duo francese di dj, che nel 2006 pubblicarono We Are Your Friends, remix della canzone Never Be Alone dei Simian. L'anno dopo pubblicano il disco d'esordio (Cross) per la Ed Banger Records, etichetta francese di musica elettronica del manager dei Daft Punk, Pedro Winter aka Busy P. Ottenendo successo un po' in tutto il mondo, i Justice decisero di ritirarsi per un po' per dedicarsi al loro nuovo disco che è quello che sto per recensirvi. Preceduto da due singoli (la splendida Civilization e la mediocre title-track, che presenta un lunghissimo piano sequenza nel video), Audio, Video, Disco (dal latino sento, guardo, imparo) è un brusco cambio di rotta del duo verso sonorità rock vintage, che ha stupito e deluso non poco i fan che si aspettavano un Cross 2. E se il secondo album è sempre il più difficile nella carriera di un artista, i Justice non se la sono cavata comunque male. Paragonandoli ai Daft Punk, come fanno tutti i critici nelle recensioni dedicate ai Justice, si potrebbe avvicinare questo a Discovery. Infatti, entrambi guardano al passato e alla probabile citazione degli idoli musicali individuali. Se da una parte i Daft Punk guardavano al funk, alla dance e all'italo disco di Moroder e Cerrone, i Justice ora guardano al rock progressive, agli Yes e agli assoli infiniti alla Brian May (e anche qui a Moroder, perchè no?). Audio, Video, Disco presenta diverse tracce cantate in più rispetto al loro esordio ma le più riuscite sono sicuramente quelle interamente strumentali.
Se l'imponente Horsepower traballa tra un'interessante composizione orchestrale e una sigla di un telefilm di serie B, il perno centrale del disco è Canon, preceduta da un prologo dal gusto quasi medievale, che presenta evoluzioni strumentali mai raggiunte dal gruppo in questione, lasciando l'ascoltatore inebriato tra tastiere e chitarre che virtuoseggiano sulle note alte in maniera fenomenale. Le parti cantate molto spesso cercano di fare il verso agli Who oppure ai già menzionati Yes, in maniera non sempre troppo efficace (Ohio, On n' On, Newlands). Il dubbio però che mi viene è questo: ma allora il disco in questione merita o meno? Probabilmente Audio, Video, Disco è più innocuo e non avrà una rilevanza musicale come ebbe Cross su gruppi elettronici del periodo come Boys Noize, Bloody Beetroots o MSTRKRFT (anche se qui in alcuni casi si va di più verso la fidget house). In ogni caso è un disco molto piacevole, vale la pena ascoltarlo.
P.S. Non vi sembra un'incrocio tra George Michael e Tiziano Ferro, il campionamento vocale in Helix? Che featuring magnifico, sarebbe. Ahah!
