Una base scarna e minimale ci da il benvenuto nel mondo dei cuori infranti.
Non parliamo di classiche storie di college americani partite male e finite (se possibile) anche peggio. No, niente frange piastrate e completini su misura. Solo un uomo che ha perso i due amori più importanti della sua vita. La propria madre e la fidanzata. La prima, considerata come un faro acceso nel mezzo del nulla, un punto di riferimento fisso, strappata dalla povertà e da una vita di stenti dal figliol prodigo. Una nuova casa, una nuova vita, una nuova immagine. I sacrifici, si sa, vengono premiati. Mr. West non ha mai dimenticato quelli che la madre ha fatto per farlo arrivare dove si trova ora. La ripaga di tutto, e prechè no, gli da una mano anche per quanto riguarda gli acciacchi dell'età. Un seno magari un po' troppo pronunciato che crea ormai problemi, e un'operazione chirurgica per diminuirlo. E la madre che muore sotto i ferri.

Due amori, si diceva, perduti all'improvviso.
Abbandonate le atmosfere Hip-pop spensierate e le hit da dancefloor, Mr. West si spoglia completamente di tutti i vestiti firmati e macchine sportive, per abbandonarsi completamente al dolore. Atmosfere lugubri e fredde dominano questo disco che di Hip-pop non ha assolutamente nulla. E' una sorta di viaggio nel Soul elettronico, con una voce resa ancora più fredda e robotica dall'autotune. 12 pezzi sfacciatamente anti-commerciali, introspettivi e sussurati.
E' un disco atipico che solo Kanye West poteva permettersi di fare, in mezzo a quel deprimente panorama di artisti Nigga-blood odierno americano. Tutti macchinone sportive e catenoni d'oro. Solo Kanye West poteva permettersi di fare uscire come singolo la tribale "Love Lockdown", inno all'amore (ci risiamo) perduto.
E' un disco che contiene momenti Soul coinvolgenti ("Heartbreak"), e ballate vere e proprie (La bellissima "Streets Light"). Poche collaborazioni (se ne poteva fare a meno) che passano in secondo piano. E' il disco della solitudine e dell'initimità. Il viaggio continua con la atipica "Robocop", fulmine a ciel sereno, e con il pianoforte molto Black di "Bad News". E il cerchio si chiude con le ultime 2 perle, "Coldest Winter", canzone del disco dichiaratamente dedicata alla madre, e col Freestyle Live di "Pinocchio Story".
E il cerchio si chiude. Il palloncino a forma di cuore si sgonfia.
E tutti a casa.
