"Parlate male di me, basta che ne parliate."
Questo deve aver pensato Tomi Petteri Putaannsuu sul finire degli anni 90', quando un'idea tanto ridicola, quanto geniale, gli balenò in mente. Rivisitare la formula KISS, ossia porre la teatralità e l'immagine al centro dell'attenzione, insieme a performance scabrose e melodie tipicamente anni 80', sullo stile di gruppi come W.A.S.P., Twisted Sister, Alice Cooper, Lizzy Borden, facilmente orecchiabili, ma potenti. Fu con questa premessa che nel 1994 nacquero i Lordi, gruppo finlandese fondato per l'appunto da Putaansuu, in arte Mr. Lordi, il quale prefissò subito un punto esistenziale per il gruppo, lo spettacolo doveva essere tutto. Riprendendo perciò l'idea che i KISS ebbero negli anni 70', i Lordi si equipaggiarono con tanto di costumi e trucco, assieme ad una smisurata passione per i film horror.
Nel 2002 vede la luce il debutto dei Lordi, intitolato "Get Heavy", con una copertina al limite della decenza, ma con canzoni che faranno abbandonare ogni dubbio agli scettici. Va detto che ogni singolo pezzo fu composto dal frontman, e cantante, Mr. Lordi molto prima che quest'ultimo chiamasse a sè gli altri componenti, pezzi che all'epoca non furono pubblicati dalla casa discografica per via di alcuni testi non proprio adatti ad un pubblico giovanile, e che furono cambiati prima dell'uscita di questo debutto.
Seppur la maturazione stilistica e musicale dei Lordi in questo lavoro non è ancora completa, "Get Heavy" contiene comunque canzoni di ottima fattura e coinvolgenti al punto giusto. Basta ascoltare le trascinanti "Devil Is A Loser", che in futuro sarà uno dei punti forti nei concerti della band, e "Would You Love A Monsterman?", della quale consiglio di guardare assolutamente il video. Più anthemica e potente è invece "Rock The Hell Outta You", che presenta un ottimo lavoro dietro le pelli, mentre "Last Kiss Goodbye" mette in risalto le tastiere, che specialmente nel ritornello fanno da colonna portante all'intera canzone. Con un gruppo simile mi verrebbe da dire di non aspettarvi ballate, ma "Icon of Dominance" si presenta come un lento ben riuscito, che con un basso eccezzionale a sorreggere la voce roca e cavernosa del cantante, sembra di ascoltare un pezzo dei Journey o dei Bon Jovi, ma incazzati all'ennessima potenza. Considero invece "Hellbender Turbulence" e "Biomechanic Man" due inutili riempitivi, con solo la seconda che presenta nel ritornello qualche spunto interessante, ma niente più. Diciamo più un'occasione sprecata. Sono ancora le tastiere a farla da padrone in "Monster, Monster", altra canzone che nei primi anni di carriera del gruppo si rivelerà come il loro cavallo di battaglia,insieme a "Devil Is A Loser", peccato che ai giorni d'oggi non venga più eseguita.
La carriera della band fu ovviamente prolifica, anche grazie alla partecipazione alll'Eurovision Song Contest del 2006, con conseguente vincita totalmente inaspettata. Molte ovviamente sono state le critiche, e altre ancora ci saranno, sul fatto di intraprendere una carriera musicale basandosi essenzialmente su costumi di scena e se vogliamo, copiando idee che band passate ebbero, e che le portarono il meritato successo. Ma il mondo musicale è fatto anche così, a mio modo di vedere, e finchè lo scopo è quello di far divertire, non vedo che male vi sia. Questo "Get Heavy" non sarà certo un capolavoro del genere, non sarà influente, ma di una cosa è sicuro. Vi farà passare poco meno di un'ora in un po' di sano divertimento, e penso che a volte non si possa chiedere di meglio. O no?
