I Low sono una di quelle band amate visceralmente dai fan, che non hanno mai avuto un successo di pubblico importante ma che la critica guarda con grande rispetto. I loro dischi hanno uno standard elevato, i Low arrivano sempre a segno e sanno reinventarsi e sorprendere (l'ultimo lavoro, "Double Negative" ha spiazzato e non poco). Per quanto riguarda "The Curtain Hits the Cast", loro terzo full lenght datato 1996, vi faccio una proposta: comprate questo disco e non ascoltatelo. Riponetelo nello scaffale e dimenticatelo. Alla prima giornata veramente nera che vi capiterà, una di quelle in cui non va dritto nulla, in cui il tempo è nemico e vi perseguita, una di quelle giornate in cui arrivate a casa col fiato corto e vi sembra impossibile lasciare le scorie che avete accumulato fuori dalla porta, beh alla fine di una giornata così prendete The Curtain Hits the Cast e mettetelo sul piatto. Se potete rilassatevi, mettetevi una cuffia, versatevi un bicchiere di vino e fatelo partire. Solo allora potrete apprezzare la bellezza onirica e delicata di questo lavoro. Fatevi trasportare dalla lentissima trama di chitarra, basso e batteria, impreziosita da un sapiente tocco di elettronica, perdetevi nello splendido intreccio di voci di Alan Sparhawk e Mimi Parker ("Stars Gone Out è una perla), ascoltate le bellissime sfumature folk di "Anon" , perdetevi nelle suggestioni a la Nick Drake di "The Plan" , ripetete come un mantra "Over the Ocean", seguite i morbidi tornanti slow core di "Laugh", aspettate in punta di piedi che il post rock di "Lust" compia il suo ciclo e quando sarete appagati, pensando che questo disco non abbia altro da offrirvi, fatevi sorprendere dai 15 minuti di warp e delay di "Do You Know How To Waltz?". Quando avrete terminato questo viaggio starete molto meglio, ve lo assicuro, perché pochi dischi come questo, sanno prendersi cura dell'anima.
