È tarda notte. State vagando per le strade di una città mitteleuropea (che so… Anversa…), quando, passando accanto alla porta di un piccolo club con un cartello che dice Magnus live, sentite – attutiti dalle pareti – dei beat profondi, un basso molto groovy e allora non ce la fate: varcate quella soglia ed entrate. Il club è piuttosto buio, l’atmosfera è dominata da chiaroscuri dentro cui corpi si muovono armoniosi, al ritmo di tutti i sound coi quali è possibile far dimenare la gente in un club... Dance, electronica, funk, techno, eccetera. Cercate con lo sguardo il tipo con le cuffie per vedere che strumenti maneggia, e ne trovate addirittura due; ma uno di loro, quello biondino, con la barbetta incolta e il viso innocuo attraversato da lampi di follia, quello lì lo conoscete! …Tom Barman?!? Che cacchio ci fa lì?!?
Quante anime diverse ha questo ragazzo? Quella alternative dei dEUS (dove ha riposto anche il cuore), quella da regista di Any Way The Wind Blows, quella da cantautore dei live con Van Nueten, più tutte le sfaccettature mostrate nelle varie collaborazioni in giro per l’Europa. Ma quest’altra (nuova nuova: 2004) è davvero singolare per un indie-rocker come lui: un’anima electro-dance!
Magnus è infatti un progetto in cui Tom collabora con C.J. Bolland, uno che ha l’anima – e anche il cuore – da dj techno. L’intenzione è quella di creare qualcosa di insolito, e con due musicisti di estrazione quasi opposta (più i vari preziosi tocchi altrui – tipo Peter Vermeersch, Mauro Pawlowski, Tim Vanhamel, Tomas De Smet) vorrei anche vedere… questo qualcosa, comunque, se ne fotte del cuore e dell’anima: la musica di Magnus è per il corpo. The Body Gave You Everything: il titolo dice tutto!
“Rhythm Is Deified”: Tom lo ripete ossessivo già nella prima traccia col suo timbro, sorprendentemente (ma non troppo) a suo agio anche in queste atmosfere da club; self-confident o dolce, auto-ironico il giusto. “Summer’s here” (parte anche della colonna sonora del film girato da Barman, insieme a “Assault On Magnus”), in mezzo ai sample, vi ricorda che Tommy il gusto per la melodia ce l’ha e non ci sono cazzi. Fenomenale “Soft Foot Shuffle”, un drum’n’bass che ve ne dice un’altra: what the body doesn’t remember / is what the soul has got in store for you / and when the soul finally surrenders / you’re gonna know it made your body move… “French movie” vi fa accorgere di quanto è sofisticato il tutto, e al contempo vi esalta, non resistete, parte la testa, partono le spalle, anche il vostro corpo si sta dimenando (e anche quello sbando di donna coi capelli corti e i lineamenti soavi si muove sinuosa, è la stessa che emerge soffusa nel booklet e in copertina)… Don’t miss a single beat…
