Era il 1976 quando il chitarrista e cantante Mark Shelton mise le basi del suo progetto musicale, i Manilla Road. L'Hard Rock settantiano mise le basi di quello che sarebbe stato il classico Heavy Metal del decennio successivo, attraverso diversi filoni. Figli degli Uriah Heep di David Byron e Box, il filone in questione è riconducibile al piu primordiale dell'Epic. I Manilla Road vengono oggi conosciuti come i precursori di un genere che vide successivamente nei Vergin Steel e nei Manowar i massimi esponenti. Ma poco ricordano gruppi come i Cirith Ungol, ad esempio. Sta di fatto che di Epic nell'esordio del gruppo di Kansas ce ne è ben poco, trattandosi di un disco che fa del suo punto di forza il grezzume e la rozzagine dei tre componenti.
Deve tanto all'Hard Rock, e questo è certo, a partire dalla prima 'The Dream Goes On', che sembra essere quasi stata scritta dai Grand Funk Railroad. Il disco procede attraverso tracce interessanti come 'Cat and Mouse' e 'Far Side Of The Sun', ma trova la sua peculiarità nelle ultime due canzoni. Si tratta infatti della ballad 'Centurian War Games', sorretta da chitarra acustica, in cui si evince il primo embrione Epic del complesso. E infine l'interminabile 'The Empire', dalla lunghezza esasperante, che mette però ben in chiaro le capacità di un gruppo che tanto avrebbe dato al metal negli anni successivi. Sicuramente la traccia piu elaborata e studiata. Per il piacere di Dragonstar.
