E' come se quelle note si fossero stampate indelebilmente su di me. E' come se il boato di quel pubblico, l'energia che scaturiva, ogni singola nota musicale, ogni singola parola del cantante, si siano fissate nella mia mente senza volersene andare. E anche non essendo stato presente, ma avendo visto solo da uno schermo, posso semplicemente immaginare. Immaginare la potenzaraccolta in quella sera, immaginare la sincera voglia di suonare, cercare di capire in minima parte le migliaia di emozioni che ogni persona aveva in ogni momento.
Queste, e molte altre emozioni ho provato nel vedere "The Absolute Power", concerto tenutosi all'Earthshaker Festival del 2005, eseguito assieme ai 50 membri della Bohuslav Martinu Philarmonic Orchestra. Primo live in assoluto della band a comparire per intero, sotto forma ovviamente di DVD, poichè le precedenti uscite della saga "Hell On Earth" non presentavano concerti tenuti per intero, ma spezzoni, "The Absolute Power" rappresenta in circa tre ore di live, l'attitudine che ha sempre rappresentato i Manowar durante la loro carriera. Energia, potenza, ma anche menefreghismo, tamarragine. Una particolarità che rende questo live diverso da tutti gli altri è sicuramente la produzione. Più di venticinque telecamere sono state posizionate all'interno dell'arena, per rendere il concerto agli occhi di chi lo vedesse a casa, come il sottoscritto, più epico che mai.
La scaletta riprende i migliori pezzi dei Manowar, scaletta che però viene suddivisa in tre parti. La prima comprende le canzoni che sono diventanto a lungo andare simbolo della band, come lil classico pezzo d'apertura omonimo, "Kings Of Metal", "Sign Of The Hammer", quest'ultima resa benissimo dal vivo grazie ad un Eric Adams in forma pressochè perfetta, la più recenta "Call To Arms", l'anthemica "Brothers Of Metal", e la devastante "Kill With Power" con uno Scott Columbus (RIP) veramente eccezionale. La seconda parte vede il ritorno per una sola notte dei vecchi componenti della band, primi fra tutti David Shankle e Rhino, rispettivamente chitarrista e batterista che presero parte a composizione e tour per "The Triumph Of Steel", album uscito nel 1992. E proprio da questo album vengono riproposte "Metal Warriors" e "The Glory Of Achilles", con una band in grande sfoggio, anche se da segnalare sono gli assoli un po' "vuoti" di Shankle. Ultimi, ma non per questo meno importanti, lo storico chitarrista Ross "The Boss" e il batterista Donnie Hamizk, che riprendendo l'esordio del 1982 "Battle Hymns" eseguono la potente "Metal Daze" e la riuscitissima "Dark Avenger", canzone che vede un bel solo di Demaio. La terza parte si snoda fra pezzi dei restanti album dei Manowar, per finire con "Battle Hymns", in cui tutti i componenti, correnti e non, si riuniscono sul palco per eseguire uno dei cavalli di battaglia del gruppo, e per poi finire con una versione registrata di "The Crown And The Ring" accompagnata da fuochi d'artificio, con un pubblico che canta a asquarciagola la canzone.
Se siete fra i tanti che denigrano la band, la visione di questo concerto probabilmente non vi farà cambiare idea, ma se siete dei fan del gruppo statunitense, "The Absolute Power" è altamente consigliato, poichè riassume in un'unica serata tutto quello che i Manowar sono e sono stati, come detto ad inizio recensione. So di non aver spiegato in maniera eccelsa quello che è contenuto in questo live, ma spero comunque che apprezzerete questa recensione. Parlare di un gruppo come i Manowar è sempre difficile e complesso, specialmente per l'influenza che hanno avuto nella scena musicale, sia positiva che negativa, ma una cosa è sicura. Questo concerto è la più corretta definizione che la parola "potenza" può avere. Spettacolare.

La potenza di esecuzione dei Manowar non ha infatti oggettivamente eguali nel mondo musicale.
La loro musica è sempre vera e pura. Non per niente hanno coniato il termine true metal che con loro non solo nasce, ma muore.
