L'ultima uscita discografica dei Marillion arriva a tre anni di distanza dal capolavoro "Marbles", e la band sa bene che non sarà facile ripetere il successo ottenuto nel 2004. Ma la carriera dei Marillion ci ha insegnato una cosa, cioè che questo gruppo non ha nessuna intenzione di adagiarsi sugli allori, ma cerca sempre vie nuove, anche se questo significa scontentare parte dei loro fan.
Per questo motivo, se "Marbles" poteva essere descritto anche con una sola parola, vale a dire "progressive", non si può certo dire lo stesso per questo "Somewhere Else". Spariscono le composizioni lunghe anche più di 10 minuti, gli assolo di Rothery e Kelly sono sensibilmente ridotti sia per complessità che per lunghezza e così si hanno brani molto più semplici e diretti, ma comunque, inequivocabilmente targati "Marillion". Questo cambio di rotta ha portato alla band molte critiche, che però sono largamente immeritate. La maggior parte dei brani sono molto belli, e poco importa se non sempre corrispondono ai canoni precedenti della band, quello che davvero importa è la capacità che hanno i Marillion di riuscire sempre ad emozionare con le loro musiche.
Quasi tutti i brani sono pervasi da una nota malinconica, più o meno evidente, sottolineata dalla ottima performance vocale di Hogart, come nella prima traccia "The Other Half" (specie nella parte conclusiva) e nella splendida perla "Thankyou Whoever You Are". C'è spazio anche per un brano che ad un ascolto sommario può sembrare quasi pop, "See It Like A Baby", ma che in realtà è tutt'altro che una composizione semplice; e per uno dei brani più tirati della loro carriera, "Most Toys". In alcuni punti, però, i cinque si ricordano anche di essere la miglior band di rock progressivo degli ultimi 20 anni, e allora ecco affiorare questa loro caratteristica nella meravigliosa title-track, con una parte centrale da brividi, ed in "The Wound". Molto bella anche "A Voice From The Past", guidata da un evocativo pianoforte e suggellata da uno splendido assolo di chitarra.
Chi ascolta i Marillion soltanto per le loro composizioni di rock progressivo stia alla larga da questo album, perchè rimarrà deluso, ma chi li ama incodizionatamente non potrà che amare anche questo ultimo lavoro della band.

L’album è bello, uno di quelli che ami fin da subito, si fonde con la notte e coi pensieri.
Somewhere Else resta comunque un album capace di regalare delle bellissime sensazioni.
