A distanza di un solo anno dal precedente "Melissa", i Mercyful Fate tornano con questo nuovo concentrato di malvagità dal titolo "Don't Break the Oath". Già dalla copertina (una delle migliori secondo me) si deduce cosa ci troviamo di fronte.
Il connubio è sempre tra black e power, il falsetto è sempre predominante ma musicalmente qualcosa è cambiato: si è perso un minimo di espressività a favore di potenza e velocità.
Si parte subito con "A Dangerous Meeting" e il suo riff portante da antologia. È una canzone d'introduzione perché la fanno da padrona la voce (come sempre) e le chitarre, lasciando alla sezione ritmica il compito di accompagnare. Discorso diverso per "Nightmare" 6 minuti di continui cambi di ritmo con King che esplora tutte le intonazioni della sua voce (dal falsetto al ghigno all'orco). La terza e quarta canzone ("Desecration of Souls" e "Night of the Unborn") non fanno che ribadire quanto detto. Si arriva così al primo dei 2 capolavori dell'album: "The Oath". Dopo un'intro di 2 minuti con basso distorto, organo e campane a morto parte la canzone vera e propria. Le chitarre ripropongono il riff portante varie volte durante i restanti 5 minuti con l'aiuto del basso e della batteria. Il testo non è altro che un lungo giuramento fatto da King a Satana. Veramente da brivido. La seguente canzone è "Gypsy" la più corta dell'album ma con un giro di chitarre veramente trascinante e un King che gioca con la sua voce. In coda all'album troviamo "Welcome Princess of Hell", canzone che non ha bisogno di presentazione e con uno degli assoli più belli dell'album, l'intermezzo strumentale da meno di 2 minuti "To One Far Away", e, in chiusura, la bellissima "Come to the Sabbath", secondo capolavoro dell'album. Ha in sé all'inizio riff pesantissimi alternati a arpeggi acustici che diverrà un espediente celeberrimo in tutti i gruppi black che si ispirerranno ai MF. La prosecuzione del brano è molto veloce e verso la metà di esso tutto si ferma per una decina di secondi per lasciare spazio a un coro gregoriano e ripartire di nuovo.
In seguito a un litigio tra King Diamond e Hank Shermann sul tipo di musica da proporre negli altri album il gruppo si spacca. Kiong Diamond proseguirà la sua carriera solista e dopo 10 anni rifonderà anche i MF ma i livelli raggiunti con ques'album non verranno più raggiunti.
