Michael Schenker sembra essere inarrestabile e pubblica nel 1982 quello che da molti viene definito come il miglior album del Michael Schenker Group: 'Assault Attack'.
La formazione cambia di nuovo: alla voce troviamo il grande Graham Bonnet, ex cantante dei Rainbow. Alla batteria c'è il bravo Ted McKenna, che insieme al fedele bassista Chris Glen formerà la base stabile del gruppo anche nei dischi successivi. Le scarne parti di tastiera vengono suonate in questo disco dal sessionman Tommy Eyre. Già dalla vulcanica copertina, dove Michael Schenker regge alta la sua mitica Flying V, il disco si preannuncia bollente, e così è: la sontuosa title-track che apre il disco non lascia respiro e bisogna dire che Graham Bonnet tira fuori tutta l'aggressività che possiede. I passaggi chitarristici sono al top come sempre.
Rock you to the ground è il classico bluesone hardrock e Dancer è invece poesia pura, con un arpeggio veramente stupendo. Samurai è una canzone memorabile, con un ritornello da urlo. Sulla scia di Lost Horizons, troviamo qui Desert song, un'altra canzone epica e mistica: l'intro è a dir poco entusiasmante e la canzone riesce a trascinare l'ascoltatore in atmosfere sahariane. Broken Promises è un buon pezzo dove risalta la solidità del duo Glen/McKenna, ma il gioiello dell'album è indubbiamente Searching for a reason, perfetta in ogni sua parte, riff e ritornello inclusi. Graham canta divinamente in questo brano, mentre Michael è semplicemente il dio della chitarra.
Ulcer è uno degli strumentali pazzoidi di Schenker: lui si diverte un mondo a suonarli, mentre l'ascoltatore rimane colpito dalle grandi qualità e capacità tecniche di questo superbo chitarrista teutonico. La produzione è ottima ed è affidata al grandioso Martin Birch, che siede anche dietro alla console durante le registrazioni. Il suono e nitido e le registrazione vengono curate ottimamente. 'Assault attack' riceve buoni apprezzamenti da parte della critica e viene premiato dal pubblico con un numero 19 nelle classifiche inglesi.
Nel mese di agosto del 1982 la band viene invitata a suonare al festival di Reading come headliner. Pochi giorni prima di questo evento, Bonnet viene licenziato dal gruppo per una lite avuta con il carismatico leader Michael Schenker, che richiama subito Gary Barden dietro al microfono. Nonostante non si conoscano bene i motivi di questa rottura, si vocifera che Bonnet abbia dichiarato in un' intervista che Schenker si servisse di un chitarrista di supporto che suonava dietro le quinte.
Ad ogni modo, come il suo predecessore MSG, Assault Attack è un pezzo essenziale nella collezione metallaro che si rispetti.
