Nel bene e nel male i Motorhead fanno sempre parlare di sé. Considerati le icone del “vero” Heavy Metal (checchè ne dicano i Manowar), idolatrati dai fan come esempio di coerenza, sempre legati alla cultura dell’HM, mai un passo oltre il loro mondo. Uno spirito di auto-conservazione che può essere considerato da alcuni sintomo di costanza, da altri semplice limite culturale della band, forse troppo intimorita per abbandonare la sicura strada intapresa con "On Parole" nel 1975.
E la storia dei Motorhead inizia davvero bene. Dalla loro fondazione sfornano gli album migliori della loro carriera ("Motorhead", "Overkill", "Bomber", "Ace of Spades" e il live "No Slip ‘Till Hammersmith"), poi nel 1982 la critica accoglie con freddezza il buon "Iron Fist".
Per Lemmy & Co. è il momento della svolta: “Fast” Eddie Clarke non ne vuole sapere più niente dei Motorhead e abbandona Mr. Kilmster, dopo appena due date del tour di "Iron Fist" (seguirà una buonissima carriera nei Fastway). Resta il problema di sostituire il primo storico chitarrista della band, quello che aveva contribuito a pezzi come "Overkill", "(We Are) The Road Crew", "The Hammer", "Bomber", "Aces Of Spades" e tanti altri successi del trio inglese.
Il cambio dal punto di vista tecnico si riserva felice. La band ingaggia l’ex-chitarrista dei Thin Lizzy Brian “Robbo” Robertson, sulla cui preparazione non si discute. Si può invece discutere sui tratti caratteriali del ragazzo, troppo poco affine all’ideologia dell’Heavy Metal, ancora legata ad un glam rock che ancora doveva fondersi col genere degli “headbangers” (manca poco, però, all’Hair Metal). Con Robertson i Motorhead danno alle stampe l’album più criticato della loro storia: “Another Perfect Day”.
Sono le solite critiche che esperti musicali e fans hanno attribuito a tutti i gruppi “duri” quando ammorbidiscono leggermente il loro sound. Anche ai Motorhead le critiche non si risparmiano. L’album, però, sotto il profilo tecnico e stilistico è ottimo: la chitarra di Robertson è più presente che mai e si ritaglia di prepotenza un proprio spazio, i brani sono molto ricercati stilisticamente, come non mai negli altri album. Disco che tra l’altro è molto omogeneo, tracce legate l’una con l’altra dallo stesso stile intapreso dal trio britannico. Entusiasmante l’alternanza di brani grezzi e lanciati come “Back At The Funny Farm” (canzone “dedicata” al manicomio) e tracce dall’accento più bluesy e hard rock primo stampo. Ascoltate “One Track Mind” e “Another Perfect Day” e potrete godere della bravura di “Robbo”, il suo apporto è davvero notevole per il gruppo. D’altronde il suond pulito della sua chitarra sembra che cozzi con il grezzo basso del leader e vocalist, ma è solo un’impressione: l’unione di questi due stili è magico. Immancabili, ovviamente, i potenti riff di basso di Lemmy, come nelle trascinanti “Shine” (singolo dell’album con “I Got Mine”), “Tales of Glory” e la conclusiva “Die You Bastard”.
L’album termina così come inizia, con velocità folle e solos di chitarra d’autore, tra riff di un basso troppo rozzo per non essere Metal e attacchi di chitarra troppo ben riusciti per non essere Metal.
Nella mia ignoranza musicale, non potendo essere all’altezza degli “esperti” critici musicali, promuovo quest’album.
