A soli due anni di distanza dall'ultimo album "Inferno", puntuali come un orologio svizzero, Lemmy e compagnia ritornano con una nuova raccolta di canzoni.
Nel 2006 è ormai difficile trovare parole nuove per descrivere un album di queste leggende viventi, vuoi perché tutto su di loro è stato scritto, vuoi perché i Motorhead da trent'anni ci propinano lo stesso album con titoli diversi come direbbero i maligni... Ma chi ascolta i Motorhead e ha tutti i loro dischi sa che non è cosi'! Questo "Kiss of death" ad esempio è diversissimo dal suo predecessore "Inferno" che a sua volta era diverso da "Hammered"...
Se "Inferno" era un album compatto e tirato dall'inizio alla fine questa nuova fatica propone dodici canzoni, varie, che vanno a comporre una sorta di omaggio ai suoni duri degli anni '80. "Sucker" apre l'album nel piu' classico Motorhead-sound veloce e dinamica come la piu' classica dei loro classici, "One Stand Night" che segue è un mid-tempo con un bel assolo di Phil Campbell nel mezzo e proprio il chitarrista, molto sottovalutato per me, sara' il vero protagonista del disco. "Devil I Know" sembra direttamente uscire dagli anni ottanta quando l'heavy metal era duro e puro. "Trigger" è veloce con un chorus che ti si inchioda nella testa, "Under The Gun" è piu' cadenzata ed avanza pachidermica. "God Was Never On Your Side" è una semi-ballad che parte acustica per diventare elettrica e LEMMY sembra prenderci sempre piu' gusto nel calarsi in queste canzoni lente che vent'anni fa sarebbero state impensabili. Ma la calma dura una sola canzone perché "Living In The Past" spazza tutto con il suo riff che sfiora il thrash metal.
"Christine" è una buona rock'n'roll song cosi' come l'epica e veloce "Sword Of Glory". "Be My Baby" è la piu' moderna del lotto con il suo riff sincopato. Ma Lemmy questa volta vuole concludere il disco col botto e piazza due belle mazzate alla fine: "Kingdom Of The Worm" è Thrash e veloce e Lemmy canta in maniera ancora piu' profonda del suo solito e ci saluta con "Goin' Down", canzone punk-rock'n'roll. Che dire, se dei nonnetti come i Motorhead sono ancora in grado scrivere album vari e metal fino all'osso come questo, possiamo dormire sonni tranquilli perché finche' ci saranno loro il genere sara' ancora vivo e pulsante in barba a tutti quelli che inseguono il trend del momento.
Dovendo paragonarlo ad altri loro album mi vengono in mente i primi degli anni '90 come "1916" oppure "Bastards". E ora come da copione li aspettiamo in sede live...
