Rispetto allo stile acustico tipico del Delta del Mississipi, il Blues aveva subito una profonda mutazione fin dagli anni '30 e '40, quando migliaia di persone si spostarono dai campi di cotone del sud verso le città industrializzate del nord. I locali fumosi di Chicago divennero presto i nuovi luoghi di improvvisazione musicale e, negli anni '50, iniziò ad imporsi il primo Blues elettrico che si avvaleva dell'utilizzo di slide guitar, piano, armonica amplificata, basso e batteria. Decisamente un modo innovativo di presentare la musica suonata dal vivo.
Giunto in Inghilterra nel 1958 per il suo tour internazionale, Muddy Waters sconvolge il vecchio continente con questo suono rivoluzionario e profondamente distante dal folk blues a cui si era abituati. Un suono che avrà successo tra i bianchi e che getterà le basi per il rock di quegli artisti britannici che da lì a poco calcheranno con successo i palcoscenici internazionali.
Due anni più tardi, nel suo primo live registrato al Newport Jazz Festival (USA) del 1960, della band d'esordio di Muddy Waters è rimasto solamente il pianista Otis Spann, mentre gli altri membri si erano dedicati alla carriera solista, forti del successo ormai consolidato. Tra i session men che lo accompagnano in questa performance vi sono l'armonicista James Cotton (che aveva già collaborato con Howlin' Wolf) in sostituzione di Little Walter e Junior Wells, il chitarrista Pat Hare subentrato a Jimmy Rogers, il bassista Andrew Stevenson al posto del grande Willie Dixon, ovvero il musicista che aiutò la band ad inizio carriera componendo alcuni pezzi storici, tra cui "(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man". Ed è proprio questo pezzo all'inizio del disco che detta i tempi di tutto ciò che verrà dopo: ossìa una spavalda, ipnotica e disinibita dichiarazione d'orgoglio nero dello showman Muddy Waters, che avrà il suo apice nella sconvolgente "I Feel So Good" e una conferma con "I've Got My Mojo Working", presente in due splendide versioni con cadenze ritmiche diverse.
Il coinvolgimento del pubblico è decisamente percepibile. Consapevole (o meno) del fatto che stia assistendo ad una rivoluzione musicale a tutti gli effetti, che interesserà anche coloro che non hanno ereditato il Blues per discendenza diretta dai solisti del Delta del Mississipi.
