Il debutto solista di Neil Young viene generalmente considerato un disco interlocutorio. Una tappa – tra l’altro priva di significativi riscontri sul mercato - nel tragitto tra la gloriosa avventura dei Buffalo Springfield e l’inizio del fortunato sodalizio con i Crazy Horse, coi quali Neil avrebbe sfornato l’ archetipico “Everybody Knows this is nowhere”.
Tale assunto in parte corrisponde a verità , ed è confermato dal fatto che lo stesso Young – reclutando la band di Danny Whitten – modificò radicalmente il suo spettro musicale, abbracciando quella ruvida elettricità che costituirà uno dei poli della sua musica.
Ma Neil Young non è un musicista qualsiasi, e un suo disco interlocutorio è pur sempre imprescindibile. Siamo nel 1968: Neil si è liberato dal giogo di Stephen Stills nei Buffalo Springfield. Ha finalmente carta bianca, godendo di un prestigio già enorme. Sentendosi probabilmente insicuro, decide di proseguire la collaborazione con Jack Nitzche – memore del capolavoro “Expecting to fly”. I sontuosi arrangiamenti di Nitzche intarsiano buona parte del disco. In alcuni casi appesantendo però le soavi melodie folk che ne costituiscono il cuore, ad esempio negli strumentali "The Emperor Of Wyoming" e "String Quartet From Whiskey Boot Hill", o nella beatlesiana “Here we are in the years”. Ma più spesso il sound riesce ad essere allo stesso tempo maestoso e scarno, come ebbe a dire David Bowie: ad esempio in tracce come “I’ ve loved her song long” e “If I could have her tonight”.
Da ascrivere ai capolavori del Canadese è in tal senso l’iridescente ballata psichedelica “The old laughing lady”, vivacizzata da una sorprendente vena soul. Sul piatto Neil getta inoltre tre assi che iscrivono il disco nell’albo degli imperdibili. Anzitutto “I‘ ve been waiting for you”, forte di un riff persino più memorabile di “Cinnamon girl”. Un pezzo che vanta diverse rielaborazioni, dai Pixies allo stesso Bowie. Quindi “The loner” – pietra d’angolo di tante ballate younghiane - nonché epiteto più ficcante per Neil negli anni successivi. Ma è nell’episodio conclusivo che Neil tocca il suo zenith creativo: “The Last Trip to Tulsa”: una sfida a Dylan sul suo terreno preferito, la ballata “stream of consciousness” alla “Desolation row”.
Persino più memorabile di “The end” dei Doors o della “Heroin” dei Velvet underground. Neil sciorina in 9 minuti di sola voce e chitarra tutte le paranoie della sua generazione, sorretto da un lirismo visionario e da una voce ora tenera, ora disperata.
Altrimenti detto: Neil Young in viaggio verso la fonte dell’ispirazione poetica.
