1989. Chi mai avrebbe immaginato che sei ragazzi di Oakland avrebbero sfondato i muri della musica, dando ispirazione a decine e decine di band, girando tutta l'america e anche l'europa, sfornando capolavori come Through Silver in Blood?
Eppure i Neurosis esistevano già, ed avevano già realizzato due album in studio. The Word As Law è il loro terzo album ed è quello che segna l'inizio della fine della prima fase del gruppo, quella più hardcore per intenderci. 70 minuti di musica che dimostrano una band ancora non del tutto unica ed imprescindibile come poi diventerà, ma comunque capace di suonare con i sani sensi (come dicono le mie professoresse).
La tracklist è abbastanza lunga ed infatti è mi è risultato difficile ascoltare quest'album tutto d'un colpo. E non sono il tipo che si arrende facilmente. I pezzi catturano i timpani dell'ascoltatore, sono rabbiosi, energici (hardcore!), le chitarre marce e ben equalizzate (sludge!), ma mancano ancora di quella componente riflessiva e più squisitamente introspettiva che la band assumerà già in parte nel più progressive Souls At Zero, per poi sfociare nell'apocalisse di Through Silver in Blood.
Pezzi un po' simili si alternano fra di loro, capaci però di suscitare quell'oppressione e quell'angoscia che li ha resi universalmente noti.
In definitiva, non è il loro album migliore. Contiene tuttavia dei buoni momenti e già possiamo pregustare il genio di questi sei musicisti, degni protagonisti della fervente scena underground internazionale dell'ultimo decennio.

Sebbene non completamente unico, mostra già l'energia grezza e alcune atmosfere oppressive tipiche del loro stile. Nonostante la difficoltà di ascolto integrale, presenta buoni momenti che anticipano il genio che emergerà negli album successivi.
