E' il 1994 quando il signor Jeff Mangum, lontano reduce dei Synthetic Flying Machine (Poi conosciuti come The Olivia Tremor Control), e la sua nuova band, i Neutral Milk Hotel, pubblicano, dopo una serie di cassette demo ormai difficilmente reperibili, il primo EP, "Everything Is".
Di bassissima qualità audio, ancora minore dei due seguenti album del gruppo, questo disco è un velocissimo viaggio in un universo malato. Sebbene sia precedente ad entrambi gli album, l'EP rappresenta la perfetta sintesi di "On Avery Island" e "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea", riportando quelli che sembrano degli embrioni di canzoni che sarebbero poi seguite. La title-track, dalla marcata tendenza al rock e dalla terribile distorsione ricorda da vicino "Holland 1945" di diversi anni dopo, così come la seguente "Snow Pt.1" si rivela la perfetta gemella di "Communist Daughter". E se il delirio pazzoide di "Aunt Emma Blowtorch" ricorda la traccia finale del primo album della band, "Pree-Sister Swallowing Donkey's Eye", "Tuesday Song" si rivela una canzone più ritmicamente allegra e melodica, sempre simile a "Holland".
Finito con tutti questi paragoni, rimane ben poco di "Everything Is" da dire. Quest' EP è, come già detto, un semplice embrione, un piccolo assaggio dei due capolavori indiscussi che seguiranno.

03 Aunt Eggma Blowtorch (04:59)
This song was recorded in Jeff's bedroom in Louisiana
when he was 17 years of age. Some of the sounds featured
are his sister playing piano, his mother hearing
sounds from space, the baby brother of Will Cullen Hart talking, a blender,
and the music of Ornette Coleman.

Neutral Milk Hotel è una band indie statunitense guidata da Jeff Mangum, emersa dal collettivo Elephant 6. Ha pubblicato due album in studio: On Avery Island (1996) e il celebrato In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998).
