Un’occasione ghiottissima per tutti i fan dei Nightwish. Ci troviamo davanti ad il primo DVD della band finlandese per la Nuclear Blast e documenta uno show straordinario tenutosi il 21 Ottobre del 2005 all’ Arena Harnall a Helsinki. Tutto è assolutamente perfetto: gli effetti speciali, le luci , il montaggio , l’intenistà delle canzoni , l’evocativo artwork (un cuore che si sta per spezzare, sintomatico per descrivere quello che sopraggiungerà) e il bellissimo libretto, colmo di immagini di Tarja e soci mentre ha vita uno dei momenti più importanti delle loro giovani vite. Tutto è perfetto. Se non un piccolo, minuscolo particolare: ci troviamo davanti ad un illusione, i Nightwish non sono una band compatta e unita, ma un gruppo in crisi, infatti subito dopo il concerto viene consegnata a Tarja la lettera della discordia. La sua avventura con i Nightwish è giunta al termine. Fa uno strano effetto vedere Tuomas commuoversi all’inverosimile nelle notte di “Ever Dream” o vedere Emppu e Tarja che escono insieme dal palco. Gli altri 4 membri sapevano già che Tarja non sarebbe stata più un membro dei Nightwish. E che si sarebbe parlato davvero della Fine Di Un’ Era per la band.
L’intro “Red Dragon” di Hans Zimmer ci introduce nella canzone che ha sempre aperto gli ultimi concerti della band: “Dark Chest Of Wonders”, una scarica di adrenalina colpisce tutti gli spettatori dell’arena. Inizialmente c’ è il vuoto , ma pian piano spuntano tutti i membri della band. L’ orchestra viene sostituita da parti pre-registrate. Con la fine esplodono le fiamme ed è il turno di “Planet Hell”, uno dei pezzi più epici del mastepiece “Once”. Grandioso pezzo. “Ever Dream” è uno dei momenti più intensi dello show, con Tarja dimessa e emozionante e il Mastermind Tuomas che viene colto dalla commozione. Un deciso riff di chitarra ci introduce all’ apocalittica “The Kinslayer”, dedicata alla strage della Colombine Hight School. Grandiosa “The Phantom And The Opera” , una delle cover più apprezzate dai fan. Il pezzo ricrea una grande atmosfera e qualche spettatr(ice) si lascia andare anche ad un pianto liberatorio. “The Siren” è uno dei pezzi più oscuri della serata. Durante la sua esecuzione vengono proiettate delle immagini che mostrano il mare in burrasca. Poi Tuomas con le sue tastiere ci introduce in un magico mondo incantato: “Sleeping Sun” , forse la ballad più famosa del combo. Tarja indossa lo stesso abito indossato nel rifacimento del vecchio video, risalente al 1999. Fiocchi di neve, cine nebbiose, aurore boreali. Che il rito degli accendini abbia inizio. “High Hopes” è una cover dei Pink Floyd, comparsa nel recente Best Of “Highest Hopes. Le tastiere di Tuomas ci cullano con dolci nenie dal sapore antico. Le parti cantate sono ovviamente affidate a Marco. Successivamente tocca a “Bless The Child” , dove vengono proiettate le parole introduttive della song e immagini evocative. “Wishmaster” è sicuramente l’inno per eccellenza del gruppo, almeno così viene fatto trapelare dal pubblico in delirio. “Slaying The Dreamer” è il pezzo più cattivo di tutta la discografia dei Finnici, ed è per questo che vengono aggiunte delle fiamme per dare un effetto ancora più maligno. Tarja si rivela una sorpresa: si dimena tantissimo e non sembra assolutamente la classica cantante d’opera, ma una Metalgirl a tutti gli effetti. Bellissimo il finale quando Marco urla i versi chiave della canzone: “I true hate all!!!” .
“Kuolema Takee Taiteilijan” è un momento molto intimista, dove Tarja viene lasciata completamente sola; è anche qua gli accendini fanno capolino… Dei riff di tastiera ci introducono alla celeberrima “Nemo”, il pezzo della consacrazione assoluta. Tarja indossa lo stesso capotto rosso del video. “Ghost Love Score” è sicuramente il capolavoro di “Once” , con i suoi repentini cambi d’atmosfera. Fanno capolino immagini di antichi manoscritti che hanno un titolo: ”Nightwish”. “Stone People” è un pezzo interpretato da John Two-Harns, nativo pellerossa protagonista della successiva “Creek’ s Mary Blood” . La successiva canzone è “Over the Hills And Far Away” , cover di Gary Moore. Il finale viene cantato anche dall’ intraprendente Marco. Chiude Il concerto “I Wish I Had An Angel” e la platea si scatena. Il pezzo viene proposto in versione più cattiva rispetto a quella in studio. È buffo vedere il piccolo Emppu saltellare qua e la. Sulle note di “All Of Them” di Hans Zimmer lo spettacolo finisce, mentre Tarja incita il pubblico e Emppu lancia i peltri al pubblico.
I contenuti Extra consistono in una photogallery e in un divertentissimo documentario di 55 minuti che fotografa le 2 intense settimane prima del grande concerto. La perfezione del concerto viene distrutta: la band e Tarja trascorrono la maggior parte del loro tempo divisi, Tarja viaggia sempre con suo marito Marcelo. Però è bello vederla firmare autografi e fare foto con i fan con una dolcezza infinita che pensavo non gli appartenesse. Davanti a tutta questa perfezione, perché solo 4 stelle? Semplice: La scaletta. Non si può realizzare un DVD e intitolarlo End Of Era, e non inserire nella scaletta brani immortali tratti da “Angels Fall First” e “Oceanborn” : “Stargazers”, “Beauty And The Beast” ,“Gethsemane”, “Sacrament Of Wilderness”, “The Carpenter” , “Walking In The Air”… Senza dimenticare le gemme più recenti che sono state tralasciate senza un motivo, come “End Of All Hope” e “Dead Boy’ s Poem”. La Fine Di Un‘Era.
