E' dalle aride terre israeliane che nel 1991 prende vita una di quelle band che, a detta di molti addetti ai lavori, è una delle migliori realtà nel panorama metal: gli Orphaned Land.
Il gruppo, formato da Kobi Farhi alla voce, Matti Svatitzki alle chitarre assieme a Yossi Sassi, Sami Bachar alla batteria ed Uri Zelcha al basso, decide di muovere i primi passi nell'underground musicale israeliano, proponendo una musica che, potrà anche non piacere, ma riesce a farsi sicuramente notare, risultando particolarmente originale e fresca, nonostante non proponga nulla di realmente nuovo: il genere proposto dal combo, è infatti definibile, a grandi linee, come un death doom metal (sto naturalmente parlando delle origini della band, non di oggi), con varie influenze provenienti sia dal progressive ma anche, maggiormente sarebbe meglio dire, dalla musica popolare ebrea.
Il primo disco che nasce da questa commistione musicale è il rarissimo "The Beloved's Cry", un demo datato 1993, prodotto, distribuito e registrato dagli stessi ragazzi, che danno vita a sei canzoni, che viaggiano tra i 4 minuti e mezzo e i 9 minuti scarsi. Passando da "Season Unite", per approdare ad "Above You All", incontrando il trio centrale formato da "Pits Of Despair", "The Beloved's Cry" e "My Requiem", sino ad arrivare all'ultima "Orphaned Land - The Storm Still Rages Inside...", si nota come questi cinque musicisti, pur mostrando una certa aggressività in ciascuna delle sei composizioni sottolineato soprattutto dal profondo growl di Farhi e da riffs di chitarra quadrati e potenti, siano anche molto attenti a non tradire le proprie radici culturali, inserendo all'interno di ciascuna traccia vari elementi chiaramente derivati dalla musica folk d'Israele, utilizzando anche strumenti tipici della tradizione della loro terra e più in generale della musica araba. Affianco a queste due forti influenze, si accosta poi la chiarissima voglia dei nostri di mettere in mostra delle capacità tecniche di prim'ordine, costruendo delle melodie estremamente curate e complesse che poggiano su tempi in continua evoluzione.
Lodevole il lavoro di ciascun membro, ma dal punto di vista tecnico, chi nel disco ha più risalto risulta essere il basso, che trova il suo spazio sia nella sezione ritmica, sia in quella melodica sfoderando dei soli di grande complessità tecnica, che dimostrano non solo una preparazione dietro la quale ci sono anni ed anni di studio, ma anche un gusto nel comporre davvero elevato, comune comunque anche a tutto il resto del gruppo.
Nonostante il disco sia, come si diceva prima, completamente autoprodotto ci troviamo davanti ad un lavoro registrato abbastanza bene, che presenta pecche davvero trascurabili che non ne minano la gradevolezza d'ascolto.
