Gli Overkill insieme ai Testament, Exodus e Forbidden (tanto per citarne alcuni) rappresentano i gruppi più importanti della seconda ondata thrash metal statunitense. Questi quattro "metallarozzi" hanno pubblicato nel 1985 il loro primo lavoro, "Feel the Fire", un album seminale ed importante per il movimento thrash. Due anni dopo tornano alla carica con un nuovo full-lenght, "Taking Over" con la stessa formazione dell'album precedente, ovvero: Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth alla voce, Bobby Gustaffson alla sei corde (che si fa in due), D.D. Verni al basso e Rat Skates dietro le pelli.
Quest'album è ancora più grezzo e potente rispetto al precedente, e questo ce lo fanno capire i riff che introducono l'opener "Deny the Cross" che gode di una sezione strumentale da paura e di un coro eccellente. Ma il bello deve ancora arrivare e "Wrecking Crew" colpisce l'ascoltatore ignaro con dei riff semplici e geniali, ma allo stesso tempo pesanti e veloci, e non a caso diventa uno dei pezzi più proposti nei loro live. Un'altro classico della band è "Use Your Head" con un ritmo ben scandito da numerosi cambi di tempo con un' assolo di Gustaffson degno di nota. Ed ora il pezzo migliore dell'album (secondo me), un vero e proprio classico della band che viene proposto in ogni loro live dal 1987 ad oggi, e si sta parlando di "In Union We Stand" in cui la voce graffiante di Ellsworth ti coinvolge per tutta la durata del brano. Un'altra canzone degna di nota è la super-veloce "Electro-Violence" composta da numerosi assoli che ti colpiscono dritto in faccia senza darti un secondo di tregua.
Questo "Taking Over" insieme a "The Legacy" dei Testament e "Among the Living" degli Anthrax fanno un bel trio thrash metal targato 1987. Un piccolo punto in più si da anche alla copertina molto esplicita che ci fa capire che quest'album è una vera e propria fucilata negli zebedei.
