"Flowers In The Dirt" venne accolto dalla critica, al momento della sua pubblicazione, come il disco più piacevole e convincente di Macca dai tempi di "Tug Of War", di sette anni prima. L'album contiene una serie di singoli di discreto successo ispirati al rock'n'roll, ai ricordi di famiglia, allo spirito beatlesiano di un tempo e la sua produzione coerente lo rende un disco diretto e compatto.
La chiaccherata collaborazione di quegli anni tra Mccartney ed Elvis Costello, sforna una serie di brani singolari e particolari. "You Want Her Too" è un pezzo dai sapori sixties in cui la voce di Costello accompagna quella di McCartney in puro stile lennoniano, "That Day Is Done" è una toccante ballata gospel, la frizzante "My Brave Face", il primo singolo estratto dal disco, è ricca di nostalgici richiami beatlesiani mentre "Don't Be Careless Love" è solo un debole riempitivo. Da notare però che la migliore composizione dei due grandi artisti resta il brano "So Like Candy", apparso nel 1991 sull'ambizioso album "Mighty Like A Rose" di Costello. Le tracce più significative ed interessanti, comunque, portano la firma del solo McCartney. La superba "Distractions" è una sontuosa canzone d'amore ricca di atmosfera, "Put It There" è un semplice quadretto acustico con un arrangiamento percussivo preso in prestito da Buddy Holly mentre "Motor Of Love" è una classica ballata ad ampio respiro dotata di una buona parte melodica forse solo troppo arrangiata. "We Got Married" è un pezzo di impronta rock con David Gilmour come ospite mentre "Figure Of Eight" e la conosciuta "This One" sono due pop-rock piacevoli, orecchiabili e per niente banali.
Non stonano e piacciono all'interno dell'opera le divagazioni funk di "Rough Ride" e il leggero reggae di "How Many People". Gran parte del merito della riuscita generale di "Flowers In the Dirt" va alla nuova solida e affiatata band di Macca formata da Robbie Mcintosh, Hamish Stuart, Chris Whitten, Paul Wix e naturalmente dalla moglie Linda. Il primo gruppo fisso dai tempi dei Wings. L'album ottenne ovunque grande successo e venne osannato sia dalla critica che dal pubblico, entusiasta di aver ritrovato un musicista rinato, convinto, maturo e nostalgico. Un McCartney assolutamente ottimista e alla vigilia di uno dei suoi più grandi trionfi di sempre: il World Tour 1989/90.

Unplugged - The Official Bootleg risulta essere un disco fresco, brillante, divertente, ma anche rilassato e piacevole.
