Il primo vero lavoro degli anni '90 di McCartney segna un deciso ritorno alle origini nel concepire la realizzazione di un album, Paul abbandona i pezzi levigati e le produzioni altisonanti che hanno contraddistinto i suoi anni '80 e che trovano piena affermazione in "Flowers In The Dirt" per ritornare a forme di espressione più immediate, senza scomodare i Beatles basta rifarsi ai Wings di "Back To The Egg" per trovare una forma analoga.
Del gruppo che ha inciso il lavoro precedente Paul mantiene per 3\4 la stessa formazione, Linda, Wix Wickens, Hamish Stuart e Robbie McIntosh mentre Blair Cunnigham sostituisce Witten (impegnato con i Dire Straits) alla batteria. Le registrazioni producono molto materiale e l'idea iniziale del Macca è che il lavoro debba essere necessariamente doppio, alla fine però "Off The Ground" vede la luce nella veste originale solo sul mercato Giapponese mentre nel resto del mondo il secondo disco viene spezzato in diversi EP, questa è una precisazione doverosa perchè solo ascoltando tutto il materiale s'intuisce che questo lavoro è molto riuscito e vario e che mette in evidenza l'anima ecologista dei McCartney.
Le prime note della title track scandite da roboanti chitarre elettriche rispecchiano pienamente il nuovo sound, tutto semplificato e reso immediato, con "Looking For Changes" McCartney denuncia la pratica della vivisezione e degli esperimenti sugli animali nei laboratori, una grande prova da rocker resa ottimamente anche dal vivo. "Hope For Deliverance" è un brano acustico dalle atmosfere latine molto riuscite che rendono la canzone un buon pezzo di facile presa sul pubblico, della collaborazione con Costello, Paul recupera il valzer di "Mistress An Maid", una canzone sulla solitudine osservata attraverso gli occhi di una donna, uno dei pezzi più belli dell'album. La scelta dei brani però non è molto condivisibile, vengono pubblicati su Ep grandi pezzi come "Long Leather Coat", a firma di Linda sul tema delle pellicce, e "Big Boys Bickering" (brano censurato per via del ritornello che invita i politicanti che si disinteressano dell'ecologia ad andare a quel paese) per far strada sull'album a cose più semplici come "Biker Like An Icon", brano ispirato da una storia vera di una ragazza che scappa di casa invaghita di un motociclista.
Ma brani come "C'mon People", la ballata pianistica di "Winedark Open Sea" rendono prezioso l'intero disco che regala anche una cosa curiosa, la rilettura di "Warm And Beatiful" del 1976 ora diventata "Golden Earth Girl" che Paul dedica a Linda, belli i versi"La ragazza dal cuore d'oro, animale femmina /Canta al vento, al tramonto riposa/in un nido muschioso/Avverte il chiaro di luna nell'aria/Il chiaro di luna nell'aria."
Il disco costituisce l'ossatura del nuovo tour mondiale, che è l'ultima prova del vecchio McCartney prima dei radicali cambiamenti dovuti al fato che lo attendono.
