Io purtroppo questo sito non lo "faccio", lo "seguo" e basta.
Quindi non mi resta che recensire dischi del recente passato, anche se a me continuano a sembrare immobili, sospesi nel vuoto, senza una collocazione temporale.
PJ Harvey è un personaggio strano nel panorama musicale, tanto che si fatica ad accostarle qualcuno. Ci provano con Patti Smith o con l'alter ego femminile di Nick Cave ma i paragoni non reggono.
C'è chi invece ci si accosta da sola come ha fatto quella demente di Carmen Consoli che con un'arroganza punibile con la vita si è dichiartata "la PJ Harvey italiana" (uccidiamola!).
Mi piace valutarla per quello che è, un astro che brilla di luce propria.
In questo contesto si pone questo disco, "Is This Desire?" che ha una atmosfera incredibile: nuovi suoni non mascherano lo stile di PJ anzi lo esaltano.
"Is this desire Enough enough To lift us higher To lift above?"
L'antico tema di Eros e Thanatos nella mente visionaria di PJ, evidente nella superba canzone che intitola l'album. E che dire poi della perfect song "A Perfect Day, Elise", quasi uno spot pubblicitario, quasi dance e pure così grezza negli arrangiamenti.
Il disco si apre con "Angelene" "I see men come and go But there'll be one who will collect my soul and come to me Two-thousand miles away He walks upon the coast Two-thousand miles away It lays open like a road".
Ci sono tanti nomi di uomini e donne in questo disco, nei titoli quali... Elise, Angelene, Catherine e nei testi... Joe, ad esempio. Nomi che PJ dà al proprio immaginario, una sorta impersonificazione dei propri pensieri. È geniale e struggente. Come la penultima canzone, "The River" dove tutti gli strumenti sembrano accarezzati e la voce di PJ sembra scorrere come trascinata dalla corrente verso la foce.

Un gran bel disco, forse non all'altezza di altre produzioni della cantautrice, ma una tappa fondamentale per chi vuole farsi un'idea su di lei.
