Conoscete i quattro supereroi dell'heavy metal? Sì, sono proprio loro: The Electric Bat, Motorman, The X-tinguisher ed il grande Cowboy Axe. Ora se non conoscete la band starete per cambiare pagina, ma se vi dicessi Gilbert, Martin, Alderete e Travis?
Quando ho saputo che nella stessa band suonavano Paul Gilbert ed il batterista dei Judas Priest non ho resistito ed ho subito acquistato questo "Superheroes". Non me ne sono affatto pentito. I quattro in questione ci hanno regalato un disco strabiliante, nel quale spicca la personalità straripante del signor Paul Brandon Gilbert, ma dove non mancano di farsi notare gli altri tre matti (Jeff Martin sarebbe un batterista, in teoria non un cantante!!).
I riff sono belli belli, lo stile è un po'glam (se vedeste il libretto del cd...) ed il metal proposto è di fattura squisita.
Ascoltate il riff di chitarra di "Superheroes" e vi renderete conto che l'ex chitarrista dei Mr. Big effettivamente non è del tutto umano. Una cosa che mi ha colpito è la prova di Scott Travis: abituato a sentirlo intrappolato negli schemi ferrei dei Judas Priest non mi aspettavo di trovare un artista vario, che come al solito fa uso ed abuso di doppio pedale, ma che in questa band trova il modo di esprimersi di più. Parlavamo di doppio pedale (o doppia cassa, come preferite)? La strumentale "King Of The Monsters" ne è satura, ma non è penalizzata da questo, ed il suo fascino è immenso. Nella composizione dei pezzi i quattro non hanno voluto inventare nulla di nuovo, creando un mix di heavy metal e hard rock. La più vicina a questo secondo genere è la splendida "Mad At The World". Ma questa formula tutt'altro che innovativa è rinvigorita dalla personalità del cantante e dall'eclettismo del fantastico Paul che impreziosisce ogni pezzo con i suoi interventi chitarristici davvero maestosi.
L'album comprende tra l'altro la riuscitissima cover del pezzo "Godzilla" dei Blue Oyster Cult, che è l'ennesima perla in questo disco meraviglioso insieme alla seconda strumentale "Viking Kong", nella quale "The Electric Bat" dimostra di essere un autentico Guitar Hero.
Ogni buon Metallaro dovrebbe possederlo, purtroppo come in tanti altri casi queste bands non godono della fama che meriterebbero. Ma forse è anche per questo che ci piacciono tanto.
Imperdibilissimo.
