Dopo il successo di "Rising" e il live "On Stage", i Rainbow tornano in studio nel 1978 per registare un nuovo album. Da segnalare dei cambiamenti nella formazione: al posto di Carey arriva Dave Stone alle tastiere, mentre al posto di Bain, al basso, arriva B. Daisley (ma quest'ultimo arriverà solo a registrazioni praticamente ultimate e il basso nel disco è suonato interamente da Blackmore). Con LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL i Rainbow ci presentano un album meno epico e meno maestoso, ma maledettamente più graffiante e accattivante. L'album, comunque non manca ad offrire atmosfere tipicamente "medievali", atmosfere che caratterizzano tutti gli album Rainbow con R.J. Dio alla voce.
Ad aprire le danze tocca alla trascinante title-track, "LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL", un vero inno per tutti i fan metal del periodo. Sulla base di un potente ritmo in terzine di Powell, R.J. Dio ci offre subito un'ottima prova, molto calda e molto potente. Veramente bello anche il Riff e l'assolo di Blackmore. Alla seconda traccia troviamo l'ottima "LADY OF THE LAKE", condotta da una bellissima interpretazione vocale di Dio, dove trova spazio anche un ottimo assolo di chitarra slide del Man In Black. Da notare anche il testo, scritto da Dio, molto "medievaleggiante" e pieno di metafore. Dopo "LADY OF THE LAKE", si passa a "L.A. CONNECTION", un brano molto "Zeppeliano", che fa uso del piano-boogie. Canzone mediocre, nonstante la solita buona prova di Dio. A risollevare il disco ci pensa la fantastica "GATES OF BABYLON", a mio parere il brano migliore del disco. Aperto con il suono della tastiera di Stone, il brano si basa su un riff molto orientaleggiante (come il testo del resto) ed evocativo. Il drumming molto preciso di Powell supporta la voce di Ronnie Dio, in questo caso molto potente e calda. Verso metà canzone, Blackmore sfodera un assolo superlativo (a mio avviso uno dei migliori di tutta la sua carriera), che fa venire i brividi (almeno al sottoscritto) ad ogni ascolto. E' per me la canzone dove si concentra tutto il sound dei veri Rainbow. Subito dopo "GATES OF BABYLON" si passa a "KILL THE KING" (già presente su "On Stage") un brano in cui infuria la doppia cassa di Powell e dove Blackmore si diletta con un assolo molto trascinante e, al tempo stesso, molto teatrale. Il testo parla di una rivolta popolare contro il potere del sovrano, come testimoniato dagli ultimi versi: "The People roar: Strake him down, take his crown, Kill The King". "THE SHED (SUBTLE)" è il brano peggiore di tutto il cd. Dopo un solo iniziale di Blackmore si inserisce successivamente una sezione ritmica binaria di Powell non molto convincente. Non basta la buonissima prova di Dio a salvare dalla mediocrità questo brano, che comunuque si presenta ascoltabile e orecchiabile. "SENSITIVE TO LIGHT" è una speed-song molto accattivante. Trascinata da un bel riff di Blackmore e da una sezione ritmica molto veloce e potente, "SENSITIVE TO LIGHT" è diretta e immediata, difficile da dimenticare (grazie alla solita, ottima prova di Dio). Si chiude con il terzo capolavoro dell'album, la lenta e melodica "RAINBOW EYES", in cui il solo Ritchie e un'orchestra di violini accompagnano la calda voce di Dio (qui nel ruolo affascinante del menestrello) in un brano molto riflessivo ed introspettivo.
Dopo il tour promozionale dell'album, Ronnie Dio abbandonerà i Rainbow per unirsi ai Black Sabbath e per poi continuare con una gloriosa carriera solistica.
In generale l'album è un po' altalenante, che alterna episodi fantastici a brani un po' più mediocri. E' comunuque un buonissimo cd, che non può mancare nella vostra collezione di cd se siete fan del gruppo.

LLRnR costituisce un elemento di raccordo, e come spesso capita in questi casi il risultato perde un po’ di compattezza.
Kill the King e Rainbow Eyes rappresentano quanto di meglio ha saputo dare questo gruppo nel corso della sua prima fase.
