Dopo la consacrazione di "Rising" (1976), da molti ritenuto uno degli album hard rock per eccellenza, e le registrazioni live ufficializzate con "On Stage" (1977), i Rainbow di Ritchie Blackmore e RJ Dio entrano nuovamente in studio per realizzare il loro terzo lavoro che avrebbe dovuto, secondo il volere di RJ Dio, seguire le orme del precedente, ma Blackmore voleva ridare ai Rainbow quel tocco un po' più blues presente in "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" (1975), lavoro d'esordio di questa formazione hard rock. Il titolo di quest'album è "Long Live Rock n Roll", pubblicato nel 1978. Durante l'ascolto vengono fuori abbastanza chiare le divergenze tra Blackmore e Dio: infatti la tracklist alterna brani hard rock/blues a brani più heavy.
L'inizio dell'album è più che buono, anzi, ottimo. Cozy Powell parte con una scarica di rullante ben decisa che lancia un vero e proprio inno alla musica rock: "Long Live Rock n Roll" (parole sante!!). Un brano in cui si sente benissimo l'impronta predominante di Blackmore in stile Deep Purple. Il pezzo è un martellamento hard rock dall?inizio alla fine e rende giustizia a ciò che è il rock. Il cantato di RJ Dio è assolutamente grintoso e Cozy Powell si fa potente dietro le pelli.
Il secondo pezzo è "Lady of the Lake", leggermente più heavy rispetto al precedente anche se non molto convincente. Molto buono il ritornello sorretto da un pad di tastiere abbastanza determinante per l?atmosfera. L'assolo di Ritchie è molto basato su un gioco di suoni, mentre la seconda metà dell?assolo riprende la melodia del ritornello.
Molto interessante è il terzo brano che parte con un riff molto influenzato dal blues e un ritmo abbastanza deciso in cui RJ Dio riprende a cantare alla sua maniera. Solo verso la fine è possibile ascoltare un assolo di piano che accompagna il ritornello.
Molto bello è il riff del quarto brano, uno dei più belli in quest'album: "Gates of Babylon". La tastiera ci introduce in un?atmosfera cupa e orientaleggiante che ci porta all'entrata del riff vero e proprio, suonato su una scala minore armonica. Veramente bello anche il ritornello che quasi ci riporta nelle atmosfere di Stargazer. Una piccola dimostrazione di ciò che saranno i Rainbow nei futuri album anche se non avranno la stessa fortuna.
Ecco qui un brano che avrebbe potuto essere inserito benissimo nella tracklist di Rising: "Kill the King", gia eseguito live dal 1977. È uno dei punti più forti dell?album, il più heavy, il più energico: tutti suonano in maniera granitica e pesante. Ottimi Blackmore, Dio e Powell in questo brano. Assolo di chitarra da paura, epico, eroico (in cui è possibile sentire l'uso del doppio pedale da parte del batterista). La ripresa della strofa (alzata di un tono rispetto all'assolo, che era gia un tono sopra rispetto all'inizio del pezzo) è veramente da brivido: RJ Dio la canta in una maniera impressionante, come se fosse arrabbiato e scarica tutta la sua potenza nel microfono e altrettanto eccezionale è il finale: assolutamente heavy metal puro. Sicuramente il miglior brano dell'album dopo "Rainbow Eyes" che vi descriverò dopo.
Molto granitica anche "The Shed (Subtle)", in cui RJ Dio compie un ottimo lavoro nel creare ed incidere le contro-voci. Anche questa è un?anticipazione dei futuri Rainbow (ossia del volere di Blackmore).
A seguire c'è un rock n roll molto attivo, vivace, dal titolo "Sensitive to Light" che potrebbe farci ricordare "If You Don't Like Rock n Roll" incisa 3 anni prima. Molto gradevole all'ascolto ma niente di eccezionale.
Ma ora passiamo al brano che, secondo il mio parere, è il migliore in quest'album: la dolcissima "Rainbow Eyes". Blackmore suona con un effetto pulito e il tutto è sorretto da una mini orchestra di fiati, tra cui emerge un flauto; non ci sono ne batteria ne basso. Il merito della buona riuscita di questo pezzo va soprattutto a RJ Dio che, in questa occasione, canta in una maniera veramente toccante: non sentiremo mai più un RJ Dio così espressivo e dolce. Ma anche Blackmore merita veramente tanto per la sua composizione/interpretazione così sublime e raffinata del brano. Indubbiamente è una delle canzoni più belle dell'intera discografia dei Rainbow. Una conclusione perfetta, che, se pensiamo al fatto che RJ Dio lascerà il gruppo, ci farà rimpiangere la sua mancanza negli album successivi. In parole povere possiamo dire che il nostro caro RJ Dio lascia il gruppo con classe, con grande stile e originalità.
Un album che non è da buttare anche se non è all'altezza di una perfezione chiamata "Rising". Il trucco sta nell'assaporare i punti alti (anche se, a dir la verità, non sono tantissimi) e goderseli, perché il fatto di puntare l'attenzione soltanto sui punti negativi ci priva del gusto di ascoltare la musica. Il mio voto è di 3,5 stelle su 5. I difetti di quest'album sono: il sound che non è granitico come l'album precedente (il che avrebbe alzato la qualità) e le divergenze di idee tra Blackmore e RJ Dio ...per il resto l'album si fa ascoltare con molta facilità e non è difficile goderselo.

LLRnR costituisce un elemento di raccordo, e come spesso capita in questi casi il risultato perde un po’ di compattezza.
Kill the King e Rainbow Eyes rappresentano quanto di meglio ha saputo dare questo gruppo nel corso della sua prima fase.
