Uno dei migliori album hard rock di sempre! Punto. Verso la metà degli anni settanta, il carismatico chitarrista Ritchie Blackmore, già fondatore un decennio prima dei mitici Deep Purple, si trovava ad un bivio: continuare a suonare nella band che lo aveva reso celebre al mondo intero o cambiare aria? Da qualche anno ormai era stanco e demotivato, soprattutto a causa della deviazione presa dai Purple verso un sound più funky che lui (e la maggior parte dei fans) detestava. Dopo il tour di "Stormbringer" della prima metà del 1975, Blackmore decise di andarsene. La sua ultima data con il gruppo fù a Parigi nell'aprile di quell'anno. "The man in Black", come veniva soprannominato il chitarrista, decise che il suo tempo era finito e reclutò l'intera band degli Elf, capitanati da un certo Ronald Padovana, cantante italo-americano dalla grandissima voce blues, che passerà alla storia come Ronnie James Dio. Gli Elf erano un gran bel gruppo rock blues (vi consiglio di ascoltare uno qualsiasi dei loro tre dischi, "Elf", "California County Ball" o "Tryin' to Burn the Sun", tutti pubblicati tra il '72 e il '74, favolosi e anche molto rari), scoperti proprio nel 1971 e prodotti da tali Roger Glover e Ian Paice, bassista e batterista dei Deep Purple. Dopo aver fatto molta gavetta nelle città della costa est degli Stati Uniti, per vari anni furono il gruppo di apertura nei concerti dei Purple e Blackmore non ebbe tentennamenti a rivolgersi a loro per formare il suo nuovo giocattolino, i Rainbow!!
Ebbero notevole successo con il loro disco d'esordio "Ritchie Blackmore 's Rainbow", acclamato da pubblico e critica, ed iniziarono a girare il mondo in tour, davanti a platee sempre più vaste, dotandosi come scenografia ai loro concerti di un gigantesco arcobaleno al neon, che divenne simbolo della band. Nel 1976 il chitarrista decise di licenziare in tronco tutto il gruppo ad eccezione del cantante e prese con sé alcuni tra i migliori musicisti della scena rock britannica di quegli anni. Vennero presi il bassista Jimmy Bain, il tastierista Tony Carey e Cozy Powell, grandissimo batterista, forse troppo sottovalutato negli anni, ma in grado di giocarsela alla pari con gli eccezionali Bonham e Paice., "
Blackmore aveva intenzione di sfruttare al massimo le qualità eccelse della nuova formazione, e nel febbraio di quell'anno si diressero ai Musicland Studios di Monaco di Baviera, dove nacque il loro disco più eccitante ed impareggiabile, "RAINBOW RISING", prodotto da un mostro sacro come Martin Birch ("Made in Japan", "Machine Head", "The Number of the Beast" solo per fare alcuni nomi).
33,28 minuti di puro hard rock, dove il chitarrista spadroneggia con i suoi riff e assoli epici, tele dove Ronnie James Dio disegna con la sua voce potente e magnifica racconti di maghi, demoni, castelli medievali e cavalieri, dando al tutto un'atmosfera fantasy e fuori dal mondo. Si inizia con la magica "Tarot Woman", aperta da un assolo al sintetizzatore di Carey, per poi sfociare in un potente riff di Blackmore su cui si appoggia il potente ed epico cantato di Dio. "Run with the Wolf" segue a ruota, canzone molto d'impatto, aperta come al solito da un riff ingegnoso del man in black, con un Powell in grande spolvero che da carica ed energia al pezzo. Dopo l'altrettanto ambiziosa "Startruck", il cui assolo di chitarra doveva in origine appartenere ad una nuova canzone dei Purple ma che Blackmore preferì tenere per se in prospettiva di un progetto solista, si chiude il primo lato del disco. Ma il meglio deve ancora venire!!!
Apre il secondo lato la roboante "Do you Close your Eyes", curiosamente l'unica canzone dell'album ad essere priva di assoli, ma altrettanto energica e dove Ronnie James Dio esprime forse la voce più forte ed acuta dell'intero disco. La successiva "Stargazer" è ad unanimità il pezzo forte dell'intera opera: epica, magica, aperta da una lunga rullata del fido Powell, seguita da un riff del miglior Blackmore, molto effettato ed accompagnato da un organo di Carey che rende il tutto più oscuro e malvagio. L'idea originale era di chiudere la canzone con un lungo assolo di violino, lo fecero ma si accorsero in studio che il nastro al momento dell'assolo finale era finito, e tutto andò a rotoli.. Fù la canzone più suonata dal vivo dalla band ed una delle più apprezzate dai fans. Chiude quest'opera meravigliosa la tiratissima "A Light in the Black", velocissima e molto lunga con i suoi 8 minuti e fischia, degna conclusione di uno di quei dischi che fecero scuola alle future generazioni di band Heavy Metal. Dave Murray degli Iron Maiden lo reputa il miglior disco rock della storia (forse non vero, ma detto da lui..) e persino il campione del mondo di F1 Sebastian Vettel lo ascolta sovente prima delle gare, alternandolo al Led Zeppelin 4 ed al Machine Head dei Deep Purple.
Questo disco, forse il migliore della produzione dei Rainbow, ottenne il disco d'oro in UK ed il platino negli USA, dette le basi ai futuri dischi della new wave heavy metal e consacrò Ronnie James Dio come eccezionale performer. R.I.P great Ronnie!!!!
