I Reo Speedwagon possono esser considerati come uno dei tanti gruppi ingiustamente sottovalutati, che hanno brillato come stelle per un piccolo periodo sulla grande e polverosa strada del successo Americano. Il loro è un rock molto semplice e spesso dolce, che col passare dei fortunati e deliziosi anni ‘80 è diventato quasi ripetitivo e stancante. Ma alcuni lavori sono proprio ma proprio degni di lode!
Il gruppo nacque alla fine degli anni sessanta, e per diversi anni si esibì nel più completo anonimato, suonando cover di vecchi pezzi rock'n'roll, fino al '71, anno in cui firmarono un contratto con un produttore discografico e, con l'album omonimo, diedero il via alla loro lunga discografia. I primi dischi risultano molto immaturi e acerbi, ma molto affascinanti perché sanno di rock'n'roll allo stato puro, genere a cui saranno comunque sempre legati. Con l'entrata nella band della meravigliosa voce di Kevin Cronin agli inizi degli anni ‘80 il sound della band vira verso l'A.O.R., il tipico rock melodico americano, e proprio da questo momento i Reo Speedwagon riescono finalmente ad imporre il proprio nome nella storia del rock accanto ad artisti di ottimo livello quali Journey, Foreigner, Boston e Styx.
Successivamente il mondo sembra aver voltato le spalle a questo gruppo, che è comunque sempre andato avanti per la propria strada, producendo sempre lavori nuovi (alcuni veramente belli, altri un po' meno) per arrivare fino ad oggi con un nuovo disco "Find Your Own Way Home".
"Wheels Are Turnin'" è il disco più famoso e caratterizzante dei Reo Speewagon perché è il lavoro successivo al fortunato trampolino di lancio "Good Trouble" e il migliore in qualità di suoni. Che i Reo siano amanti del rock'n'roll si sente subito con "I Do' Wanna Know", un gran bel pezzo che onora l'apertura del disco, con un riff di chitarra simpatico, accompagnato dall'organo, che esegue anche un dignitoso assolo e una linea vocale ben azzeccata. L'atmosfera si fa più seria con "One Lonely Night", dove il cantante vocalizza con la sua acuta e gradevole voce, giocando sul limite fra maggiore e minore, creando quasi una mistica sfera, che poco c'entra con il gruppo in questione. Molto più caratterizzante è il pezzo che segue "Thru The Window" molto melodico e dannatamente radiofonico! A questo punto la band decide di tornare indietro nel tempo, per puntualizzare un'altra volta da quale vena musicale essi provengono: "Rock'n'Roll Star", e quindi, non ci crederete, ma si tratta di rock'n'roll.
Dopo "Live Every Moment", pezzo abbastanza tranquillo e molto orecchiabile, arriva il vero e proprio momento di gloria e onore della intera carriera dei Reo, il pezzo che viene associato al gruppo come il più famoso (un pò come dire la Smoke On the Water dei Deep Purple): si tratta di "I Can't Fight This Feeling". Questi 4:54 minuti di canzone hanno proprio fatto la storia americana della musica, e, giustamente, la si può definire una dei caposaldi del genere, uno di quei pezzi che in una raccolta di hard rock melodico non potrebbe mai mancare. La conferma di questo successone la potete avere se andate a vedervi l'esibizione dei Reo Speedwagon al Live Aid del 1985: troverete un pubblico di migliaia di persone abbastanza in delirio per la loro strepitosa performance, e soprattutto per questa song.
Subito dopo questo pezzo cosi intenso si passa da "Gotta Feel More" a "Break His Spell", pezzi simpatici tutto sommato pregevoli e apprezzabili, per arrivare alla fine del disco con la title-track. "Wheels Are Turnin'" è un pezzo potentissimo, in cui tutto sembra perfetto, e nel quale i musicisti si sanno veramente far valere: gli assoli sono bellissimi, soprattutto quello di pianoforte, e ancora una volta Cronin si dimostra un cantante dalla voce fantastica. Una lode a parte va ai coretti che i Reo riescono a intonare: in tutto il disco, come nell'intera discografia, una delle loro grandezze sta appunto nella loro abilità nel cantare tutti insieme.
Ok, i Reo non sono proprio un gruppo che ha portato grandi novità, che ha stravolto il modo di far musica, che ha lanciato nuove mode o scandalizzato il mondo intero, ma a volte la genialità sta proprio nella semplicità.
