Bella la musica dei Riverside, piena e avvolgente che, come l'acqua nel letto del fiume evocato dal nome, scorre lenta e vellutata in alcuni tratti, rapida e cupa in altri; acqua mai fredda, ma al contrario sempre tiepida e in alcuni casi addirittura calda.
Questo "Out Of Myself", dei Riverside, gruppo originario della Polonia, mi ha impressionato fin dal primo ascolto per lo stile e la ricercatezza delle atmosfere.
Impossibile non cogliere in alcuni pezzi come "Loose Heart" o "In Two Mind" delle chiare ispirazioni floydiane, specialmente in alcuni fraseggi di una chitarra sempre precisa, mai sopra le righe, attenta a riempire i vuoti e a impreziosire i brani con colori dai toni caldi; impossibile non riconoscere le atmosfere tristi e malinconiche tipiche dei Porcupine Tree di "In Absentia" o degli Opeth di "Damnation". In questo modo i Riverside sono riusciti sfruttando (attenzione, non copiando!) queste influenze a creare un loro personalissimo stile, che è il frutto dell'evoluzione degli stili dei mostri sacri sopra citati.
Nasce così un disco progressive di rara bellezza ed eleganza, un disco emozionante ed evocativo intriso di malinconia e sentimento, ma a tratti anche potente e graffiante, con la voce (quasi sempre dolce e avvolgente) che si fa più dura, roca, come nel brano "Loose Heart" che comincia come una giornata di sole e termina come un temporale.
Il disco nasce con la formula del concept, la cui storia inizia con "Out Of Myself" e si conclude con l'album successivo "Second Life Syndrome". Parla di un uomo che cerca se stesso nella società che lo circonda; in questo disco egli è solo e debole, cerca rifugio nell'amore ma, fallendo, si ritrova ancora più isolato, disilluso e fragile. Nel disco successivo si racconterà della sua rinascita spirituale.
In questo modo le esperienze del protagonista fanno da filo conduttore di tutta la storia, accompagnando l'ascoltatore nel suo vortice di emozioni, dalla tristezza alla speranza, dall'illusione alla disperazione. Così l'album si conclude con la dolcissima "Ok" che accarezza il cervello ed il cuore, in cui l'uomo analizza la sua situazione disperata, chiedendosi mille perchè, ma con la lucida consapevolezza che prima o poi tornerà il sereno.
Credo che i Riverside siano riusciti a tirare fuori qualcosa di geniale, questo album (come pure il successivo) ha il potere di incantare e regalare emozioni. Ascoltatelo con attenzione e ve ne innamorerete.
