"The principle of moments", secondo album di Robert Plant, esce nel 1983 e vede proseguire lo stesso discorso musicale iniziato col suo primo album solista "Picture of the eleven", ovvero una formula di rock'n roll\blues classico, soltanto un po' più "elettronico" e "tastieroso"... La band di supporto del musicista è molto valida, con il fido amico d'infanzia Robbie Blunt alla chitarra, Paul Martinez al basso, Jezz Woodruffe alle tastiere, e sua maestà Phil Collins alla batteria (coadiuvato dall'altro grande mostro Barriemore Barlow dei Jethro Trull in due tracce dell'album).
L'album, come detto, si muove sul filone rock and blues, caratteristico della prima parte della carriera degli ormai sciolti Led Zeppelin, senza però averne la carica incendiaria e distruttiva, ma mantenendosi suppergiù per tutto l'album, su toni calmi e molto "easy", ad eccezione forse della traccia d'apertura "Other amrs" che sembra riverdire per qualche minuto i fasti zeppeliniani, anche se affiorano echi Aor qui e là. Altre tracce interessanti sono "In the mood", allegra e rock'n'roll al tempo stesso, la sognante cavalcata rock "Horizontal departures" (la migliore canzone dell'album, a mio giudizio) e la misteriosa e inquietante "Big log" che sarà proposta anche come singolo, carica di atmosfere soffuse, ma coinvolgenti. La voce di Plant fa un buon lavoro e si mantiene sempre a livelli alti per tutto album e conserva sempre quell'attitudine "irriverente" e ammiccante dei tempi dei Led e che sarà poi tanto imitata dai suoi vari epigoni degli anni novanta, Axel Rose dei Guns and Roses su tutti.I musicisti di supporto sono tutti molto validi, come detto, in special modo il tastierista Jezz Woodruffe che nel pezzo "Thru with the two steps" la fa da padrone con le sue tastiere quasi new age, in un pezzo elettronico ed elegiaco in cui la voce di Plant si muove in modo molto malinconico, accompagnata dalla chitarra di Blunt, sempre all'altezza (così come nell'ottimo pezzo finale "Big Log", in cui si produce in un buon assolo di Telecaster).
In conclusione "The principle of moments" è un ottimo album di sano e caldo rock'n'roll vecchio stile, uscito tra l'altro in un periodo in cui stava esplodendo dappertutto il fenomeno new wave-elettronico: e questo, per me, è un ulteriore merito del vecchio Robert Plant, che neanche in quel periodo si è saputo piegare alle mode e alle manie del momento musicale corrente, se non quel tanto che bastava per "aggiornare" e rinverdire la sua musica.
Nota: nell'edizione rimasterizzata del 2007 sono riproposte quattro bonus track, ovvero le versioni live di "In the mood", "Thru with the two steps", la cover live di "Lively up yourself" di Bob Marley, e l'inedito "Turnaround", pezzo discreto.
