Più simili forse a un fenomeno da baraccone che a un gruppo rock, i Rockets escono col loro secondo album nel 1978: "On the Road Again" sarà un grande successo in Europa e particolarmente in Italia. Il celebre brano blues-rock dei Canned Heat, anno 1968, viene riletto in chiave "spaziale" con sintetizzatori martellanti e voce filtrata dal vocoder, e ne guadagna in ritmo e potenza. Gran faccia tosta, anzi argentea, del gruppo francese, ma questa loro cover version funziona, eccome.
Il resto dell'album è strumentale, tranne l'ultimo brano. "Cosmic Race" e "Venus Rapsody" hanno una spiccata caratterizzazione melodica affidata alle tastiere, mentre in "Space Rock" (titolo che è tutto un programma) si risente la chitarra elettrica modificata con l'effetto di talk box. Ma torniamo un attimo a "Venus Rapsody": potrebbe far parte tranquillamente di "Wind and Wuthering" dei Genesis, così come certi passaggi di "Astrolights" sembrano presi a prestito dai soli strumentali di "Nursery Cryme". I Rockets come gruppo di progressive? Ma non erano un fenomeno da baraccone?
"Electro-Voice", strumentale con parte cantata, risente dell'influenza dei Kraftwerk, infine la conclusione è affidata a "Sci Fi Boogie", dove torna la voce (senza vocoder) in uno scatenato boogie fantascientifico con chitarra elettrica e batteria in primo piano.
Diversissimi stilisticamente da un altro gruppo francese attivo negli anni ?70, i Magma, queste due formazioni fanno lo stesso percorso spaziale ma in direzioni opposte: terrestri insoddisfatti, i Magma si inventano un pianeta remoto - Kobaïa - e ne fanno la terra promessa della loro utopia; i Rockets invece vengono dallo spazio - da quale pianeta non ce lo dicono - e cercano sulla Terra, sulla strada, la loro legittimazione. Crani rasati, cerone argenteo in faccia, concerti a base di laser show: forse, più che un fenomento da baraccone, i Rockets erano proprio un gruppo di (space) rock.
