Il monicker Running Wild ha assunto con il tempo il sinonimo di garanzia. Puntuali come un orologio della vicina Svizzera, il gruppo capitanato da Rolf Kasparek, ha pubblicato con una certa frequenza sempre degli album degni di nota. Il loro sound grezzo e potente vede la piena maturazione in questo "Branded and exiled", secondo capitolo della band, che segue di un anno l'esordio "Gates to purgatory". C'è da dire però che questi non sono i Running che hanno spadroneggiato sui palchi con le loro effigi "piratesche": il loro tipico look da pirati inizia a venir fuori nel terzo lavoro, l'imprescindibile "Under jolly roger". In "Branded and exiled" i quattro teutonici sono ancora legati all'abbigliamento maideniano fatto di borchie e pelli ed inoltre le loro copertine, più che evocare il mare, evocano il "male" di chiara ispirazione Venom.
L'album è una degna prosecuzione del precedente "Gates to purgatory", anche se si sente una maggiore convinzione nei propri mezzi. Il sound rimane quello pesante e tirato di chiara matrice heavy metal. Riff potenti, batteria sempre in primo piano e la voce graffiante di Kasparek sono gli elementi distintivi di questo cd. Inutile dire che nei Running wild non troviamo l'innovazione, ma se si vuole gustare un degno disco di heavy metal, "Branded and exiled" non delude certo le aspettative. Dall'iniziale titletrack, la band teutonica ci mostra tutta la sua pesantezza metallica con una song heavy secondo per secondo, degnamente interpretata da Rolf Kasparrow. Su queste coordinate che hanno la base nella tradizione classica dell'heavy metal si muove l'intero sound dei Wild e del disco stesso. "Gods of iron", la tolkeniana "Mordor" e la splendida conclusiva "Chains and leather" hanno tutto quello che l'heavy di vecchia data deve avere: potenza, pathos, ritmo, aggressività.
Il secondo lavoro targato Running Wild non sarà certo un capolavoro destinato a rimanere nella storia, ma ha comunque contribuito a rendere conosciuto il gruppo quantomeno in Europa. Questo perchè i quattro tedeschi hanno sempre mantenuto intatta la propria proposta musicale, fregandosene delle restrizioni dettate dal mercato discografico. Il loro heavy metal non sarà certo il più originale della storia di questo genere, ma rimane un punto di partenza assoluto per tutti quelli che vogliono approcciarsi a questa musica. Kasparek e soci hanno pubblicato in quasi 30 anni di carriera lavori che forse non rimarranno nella memoria collettiva, ma che hanno contribuito allo sviluppo del genere ed hanno fatto si che i Running Wild venissero ricordati per il loro look da pirati, rendendoli inconfondibili nel panorama metallico mondiale.
