Gli Scorpions irrompono negli anni '80 con un sound reduce dagli splendori passati e con un occhio proiettato verso il futuro e, anche se non si può definirli proprio commerciali, sicuramente sono leggermente più radio oriented rispetto agli album precedenti. Ma questo, come contrariamente spesso accade, non è affatto un male, anzi, perché di fatto "Animal Magnetism" è un album molto bello.
Qui vediamo la vera ascesa di Matthias Jabs, l'ottimo sostituto di Uli Jon Roth, da molti spesso definito più anonimo o di minor rilievo rispetto al suo predecessore, forse anche perché leggermente offuscato nel disco precedente "Lovedrive" dal ritorno (temporaneo) di Michael Schenker, fratello della colonna portante degli Scorpions, Rudolf Schenker. Ma in "Animal Magnetism" Jabs si scatena e dimostra a tutti che razza di chitarrista sia.
Make it Real è il modello dell'opener per eccellenza, in cui le chitarre incrociate di Rudolf Schenker e Matthias Jabs fanno scintille, per non parlare del grandioso Klaus Meine, in forma più che mai. Il ritornello è spettacolare, così come anche la strofa, grandioso tutto insomma! Questa canzone è uno dei grandi classici che è perennemente nella scaletta dal vivo degli Scorpions. Don't Make No Promises (Your Body Can't Keep) è un branone alla Scorpions, con il ritmetto che scorre via che è un piace e il solito testo da semi-maniaci sessuali, poiché gli Scorpions, si sa, di quella cosa ne sono piuttosto pazzi. E con argomenti di questo tipo amano spesso scherzarci, come mostra la copertina, ma soprattutto il retro di essa: il "magnetismo animale" si manifesta in tutta la sua grottesca comicità, e altro non mi sento di aggiungere! Hold Me Tight è un buon brano e il ritornello è veramente notevole. Herman Rarebell, batteria, e Francis Buchholz, basso, forniscono la giusta compattezza ritmica di cui una band di Hard rock ha bisogno.
Twentieth Century Man è una ballata in cui rimane impressa più di tutte la parte di basso che, in bella evidenza, da cui si capisce che razza di bassista sia Francis Buchholz. Lady Starlight è invece la parte più commovente dell'album, una soave tristezza che si conclude con uno degli assoli di chitarra elettrica più belli della storia degli Scorpions. Bel riffetto quello di Falling In Love, canzone sulla scia di Twentieth Century Man, dove l'atmosfera ispira allegria per tutta la durata del brano. Bella. Only A Man ha un cantato originale, dettato dal duo di chitarre, che impera maestoso.
The Zoo è una cavalcata dai toni eroici, uno dei pezzi forti dell'album, anche'essa mai tralasciata dal vivo e che non si riesce a smettere di ascoltare. Bellissima la strofa cantata quasi a bassa voce, a cui rispondono in coro le chitarre, per non parlare di quando si giunge all'esplosione del ritornello, veramente a paura. A suo tempo The Zoo è stata anche coverizzata dagli Iron Maiden, che ne hanno fornito una degna versione.
Dalla title-track, la canzone che da il nome all'album, solitamente ci si aspetta il gran botto, una canzone poderosa. Mi spiace dover dire che in questo caso non è proprio così, perché Animal Magnetism è proprio il pezzo debole dell'album, in cui il ritmo è parecchio stemperato e si tocca quasi la lagna. Molto meglio risulta infatti la spettacolare bonus track, Hey You, definita addirittura "Rare Single", in cui il canto di Kalus Meine sembra insinuarsi quasi malizioso fra le note della canzone. Davvero un pezzone!
Insomma, "Animal Magnetism" è un album di buonissimo e sano hard rock vecchio stampo e preludio al grande album che seguirà: "Blackout".
