Nati nella seconda metà degli anni 60 ad Hannover, allora Germania Ovest, gli Scorpions sono un complesso importantissimo a livello mondiale, ma la loro fama non è altrettanto proporzionale alla bravura se li compariamo ad altri gruppi di generi contigui nati in quegli anni Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rolling Stones, questo fatto è da imputare forse alla loro nazione di provenienza, sicuramente, musicalmente parlando meno fervida dell'Inghilterra o degli Stati Uniti.
Tuttavia gli Scorps riescono prima ad emergere nel panorama teutonico e poi affermarsi in tutto il mondo con "Virgin Killer". Il primo album degli anni'80 è 'Blackout' la cui riuscita era stata seriamente minata da un problema alla gola del vocalist Meine vera spina dorsale del gruppo assime a Rudolph Schenker. Ritengo quest'opera il miglior lavoro in studio della Band, è un disco spumeggiante e tirato come pochi altri. La prima traccia è anche la title track "Blackout" caratterizzata da uno "Stop and Go", se così si può definire, prima del ritornello, è solcata dalle cavalcate rapide e furiose delle chitarre di Schenker e di Jabs. Con "Can't Live Without You" si cambia registro, introduzione di Basso poi attacca la chitarra di Schenker e i suoi assoli, per non spegnersi mai, accompagnata da un Meine stratosferico e arrabbiato, una traccia adrenalinica, orecchiabile e soprattutto ballabile, che si impossessa di chi l'ascolta. Per i motivi elencati fu scelta come singolo.
Con "No One Like You" si rallenta un po' il ritmo, è una canzone piena di pathos in cui sono leggermente più presenti le percussioni, alternate immancabilmente agli assoli di Schenker ed al Basso di Bucholz. "You Give Me All I Need" frena irrimediabilmente il disco ma è una grande canzone, anch'essa introdotta da un lungo assolo di chitarra, sfocia nell'orecchiabile ritornello "cullato" da Schenker e Jabs. Ma subito dopo per sollevare un po' gli animi arriva "Now" brano veloce sin dalle prime note di basso, che ricordano alcuni Riff Punk/Poprock odierni, ma poi è un coinvolgente e sparato Rock and Roll, infine il tutto si chiude con un finale esplosivo in cui tutto sembra prendere fuoco, un po' alla TNT degli AC/DC. È il brano più corto dell'album solo 2.40 minuti. Si prosegue lungo questi binari anche con "Dynamite" meno rapida della precedente ma in compenso si sente di più la batteria, ed è segnata da un fantastico guitar solo nella parte centrale. "Arizona" è forse il brano meno ispirato del disco e non lascia molte traccie nella memoria a parte il breve ritornello. "China White" sono sette minuti abbastanza pesanti ma comunque apprezzabili, infine la bellissima "When The Smoke Going Down" lenta, commovente e dolce per chiudere come si deve un grande album.
Si sente la mancanza senza dubbio di Roth ma Jabs non è uno sprovveduto, per quanto riguarda il disco in sè forse perde un po' di vigore fra "Arizona" e "China White" ma niente di grave.
