Avendo assistito recentemente al concerto di Uli Jon Roth ed essendo rimasto colpito dalla tracklist che l'oramai cinquantaduenne chitarrista ha messo in piedi, non posso venire a meno di recensire un disco che, come si dice in questi casi, ho consumato.
Prima di approdare alla carriera solista il chitarrista di Düsseldorf, divenne famoso per far parte di una giovane e scatenata band di nome Scorpions composta da soli membri tedeschi.
Negli scorpioni, Uli fece parte del songwriting di 4 album : l'ottimo "Fly To The Rainbow" (1974) i due hard rockeggianti "In Trance" (1975) e "Virgin Killer" (1976) anch'essi ottimi lavori, infine nel suddetto "Taken By Force" (1977).
A detta di molti l'apice viene raggiunto nel disco precedente, "Virgin Killer” ". Io invece sono di parere opposto.
Anche se l'album è segnato dai contrasti interni fra il duo inseparabile Klaus Meine/Rudolf Schenker e Uli Roth, qui troviamo brani eccelsi che faranno parte del successivo live "Tokyo Tapes" vero e proprio masterpiece.
Subito dopo la pubblicazione del live, Roth decide di abbandonare gli Scorpions, perchè si ritrovava in contrasto sulla strada che la band avrebbe dovuto prendere.
Il seguente "Lovedriver" (1979) parla chiaro ed è testimone di quello che Uli non voleva affrontare : un risvolto commerciale della band, che poi con il passare degli anni sarebbe diventato più accentuato.
Ma facciamo un passo indietro e torniamo al disco in questione.
"Taken By Force" parte martellante in tutto e per tutto. "Steamrock Fever" è un brano duro, quadrato nel quale Meine introduce la band.
La successiva "We'll Burn In The Sky” " viene introdotta con ritmi blandi e melodici, quasi a preannunciare una ballad, ma si trasforma in tutt'altro.
Dopo una strofa s'introducono prepotentemente le chitarre elettriche che scandiscono un riff magistrale by Schenker.
La canzone prosegue dritta per 6 minuti buoni, appassionando e coinvolgendo nel momento dell'assolo.
"I've Got To Be Free" è un pezzo composto dal solo Uli di ottima fattura e con un eccellente ritornello.
"The Riot Of Your Time", a firma di Meine/Schenker, si lascia ascoltare molto volentieri e non sposta molto nel giudizio del lavoro in complessivo.
Le due song che seguono sono a firma ancora del solo Roth.
Si può notare come i contrasti di songwriting siano più che evidenti.
A parte questo la band interpreta al meglio brani come "Sails Of Charon" e "Your Light".
La prima caratterizzato da un riff (ho finito gli aggettivi). . . spaccapietre.
La seconda invece molto più melodica, ma non si dimentica facilmente dopo pochi ascolti.
Arriva poi il brano spacca budella del cd : "He's A Woman, She's A Man". Il titolo è abbastanza eloquente. Meine ci descrive la visione di un "ipotetico" travestito. Ma il bello arriva soltanto nel solo. Roth ce ne regala uno memorabile. Niente velocità, ma se avessi un chitarra elettrica con me, sarebbe il primo solo che imparerei oltre a quello di "Highway Star".
"Born To Touch Your Feelings" chiude il disco. Una ballata di buon valore con un'ottima idea finale : fare un collage di voci in varie lingue che accompagnano parlando il pezzo fino al termine, iniziando pian piano una a sovrapporsi all'altra.
Nella versione rimasterizzata vengono aggiunti due brani : "Suspender Love" in versione studio e "Polar Nights" proveniente da "Tokyo Tapes" che, a seguito di rinnovo del cd, è stata esclusa per motivi di spazio.
Consiglio caldamente questa versione in quanto la prestazione di Uli, nell'ultima traccia descritta, è magistrale.
