Una delle prime cose che ho notato arrivando in DeBaser è stata la scarsità di recensioni su uno dei gruppi di maggior rilievo nella scena hard rock mondiale, sto parlando degli Scorpions. Questa band capitanata dal cantante Klaus Meine e dal chitarrista Rudolf Shenker ha riscosso molto successo negli anni '80 - '90 grazie alla ballata "Wind of Change".
In realtà gli Scorpions iniziarono a produrre musica già negli anni '70 e in questo periodo furono anche ricordati per le copertine provocatorie degli album, le quali ritraevano foto con doppisensi (cosa che li accompagna ancora adesso), una su tutte quella di "Virgin Killer", nella quale era presente una una ragazzina nuda e in molti paesi fu sostituita con una foto della band. Ma da "Virgin Killer" facciamo un salto nel tempo e arriviamo al 1979, in cui il chitarrista Uli Roth si trova in disaccordo con gli altri membri della band, la quale per "colpa" di quest' ultimo aveva un sound troppo hendrixiano per i gusti di Maine & co. Allora si decise di intraprendere una tournè mondiale diciamo di "addio" in cui si arrivò in Giappone, dove venne registrato questo "Tokyo Tapes". Probabilmente il gruppo non aveva un' idea ben precisa per il futuro, se cercare un nuovo solista o sciogliersi, dico questo perchè prima del live uscì una raccolta con tutti i successi degli Scorpions fino a quel periodo, il che, insieme a questo live farebbe pensare a un probabile scioglimento.
Parliamo ora di questo concerto, sicuramente con suoni molto più grezzi di quelli ottenuti in studio e quindi molto energico e più hard rock. C'è però anche da dire che tecnicamente non è perfetto e la voce di Meine è più rauca e graffiante, cosa che funziona molto sui pezzi tirati, ma non fa altrettanto bella figura nei lenti. La tracklist è veramente buona, suonata tutta velocissima. Meine pur non avendo la voce nella miglior condizione (come già detto in precedenza) canta con una grinta potentissima, bella figura fa anche Shenker insieme a Uli Roth (secondo me il migliore della prestazione) e tutta la sezione ritmica, vale a dire Bucholz al basso e Rarebell dietro la batteria.
Il riff potente di "All Night Long" preannuncia una partenza razzo e il trio di canzoni hard rock formato dalla appena citata "All Night Long" e le due "Pictured Life" e "Backstage Queen" non delude, Meine che grida sui refrain di Roth e Shenker fa venire voglia di saltare. Con "In Trance" e "We'll Burn the Sky" si rallenta, ma l' emozione è veramente alle stelle sulle dolci note che ti portano via e il pubblico che applaude tanto da far interrompere l'esecuzione della seconda delle due nominate. Si torna sul rock con la ritmata "Suspender Lover", altri momenti emozionanti sono le note alte di "In Search of Piece of Mind" e "Fly to the Raimbow". Forse la più grezza del disco è "He is a Woman She is a Man", dove le chitarre e la batteria fanno più rumore possibile, "Speedy's Coming" è molto più veloce ed energica che in studio. "Top of the Bill" contiene un bell'assolo di batteria dove Rarebell smentisce la posizione di "semplice membro" che gli è stata affibiata, dimostrando di essere un musicista di livello anche lui. Arrivano le due cover di turno eseguite molto velocemente una attaccata all'altra, ovvero "Hound Dog", con un bell'assolo di chitarra e "Long to Sally". "Steamrock Feaver" trovo sia un po' inutile, invece "Dark Lady" è in grado di trascinare con gli acuti e gli urli. Eseguita apposta per l'occasione una canzone giapponese, trattasi di "Kojo No Tsuky", note altissime per una base lenta che cresce man mano si va avanti. Una non brillantissima esecuzione di "Robot Man" chiude il live.
Fortunatamente gli Scorpions continueranno a produrre musica, sostituendo però il (definirei storico) chitarrista solista Uli Roth. Usciranno altri due live, "World Wide Live" e "Live Bites", il primo dei due è secondo me il migliore degli Scorpions, ma l'energia qui presente non ci sarà più. La band è ancora adesso in attività e dopo la partecipazione al Gods of Metal sembra uscirà il nuovo album.
