Una scultura di carne, sangue e ghiaccio, un'effige all'angoscia, un'autentica cerimonia al suicidio. Loro sono i Sentenced; vero, gotico e scandinavo Suicidal Metal.
"Frozen" è il gioiello della band, un'opera che riscopre le tematiche più nere legate all'esistenza umana, testi che solo l'immaginario più oscuro riesce a concepire. Parole come "misery", "grave", "pain", "kill", espresse ossessivamente nelle canzoni, risultano fresche come la neve al mattino.
Il clima s'incupisce e cristallizza subito con "Kaamos", poi "Farewell" imbocca una via che nega la riconciliazione con sé stessi e scava una profonda trincea di perdizione. L'impronta dark di pezzi come "Dead Leaves" risveglia gli istinti più innaturali, cui segue la perversa armonia di "For the Love I Bear".
La voce di Ville Laihiala prima è lucida, poi morbosa, poi delirante di colpevole pazzia nel brano che per me è il capolavoro dell'album: "The Suicider", ossia il trionfo dell'autocelebrazione della morte; toni svisceranti, penetranti sin nelle ossa come l'aria d'inverno, un pesante flagello, un limpido stupro della mente. "The Rain Comes Falling Down" è un nevischio che vela gli occhi sopraffatti da visioni maledettamente seducenti; poi è ancora suggestione, vengono dipinti scenari mistici e irreali, raggelati e deprimenti, nella purezza che diventa freddezza di "Grave Sweet Grave", e di nuovo, grazie alla partecipazione femminile di "Burn", accompagnata da sfumature death e melodie fiammeggianti.
L'impatto è talvolta stremante e traumatico, specie in "Drown Together", in cui la speranza viene restituita sotto forma di un brandello di pelle scucito a forza dal corpo. La conclusiva strumentale "Mourn" è una grandine di suoni, dove la musica riesce sempre a soffocare qualsiasi impulso alla resurrezione dell'anima e alla redenzione dello spirito, e l'estasi si completa.
