Il Brasile nella seconda metà degli anni 80' è stata la patria di un'invasione di band metal dal sound estremo, grezzo e pesantemente "ignorante", gruppi come Sarcofago, Holocausto o Attomica imperversavano nell' underground in quegli anni, ma i Sepultura erano molto più di questo già allora, quando potevano sembrare una band delle tante che infestavano il Brasile con il loro pesante thrash-death-black.
La band si forma nel 1984 a Belo Horizonte con i fratelli Max (voce, chitarra) e Igor Cavalera (batteria) affiancati da Paulo Jr. (basso) e Jairo T. (chitarra), influenzati da Slayer e Venom sviluppano velocemente un massiccio suono torcibudella fatto di riff sporchi e potenti, drumming veloce e la voce ringhiante e roca di Max che in seguito sarebbe stata battezzata "growl".
Il loro debutto questo "Bestial Devastation" dice tutto già dal titolo, è il 1985 e il thrash metal si sta espandendo in America ed Europa e i Sepultura con il loro impatto sonico rozzo e pesante spinsero il genere verso vette ancora più estreme andando a sporcare il loro thrash basilare con elementi death metal che fino a quel momento era stato materia per pochi (Death e Possessed) inoltre si può notare una certa influenza black (Hellhammer e Bathory). Questo EP di 4 brani più intro contiene quello che sarà considerato uno dei dischi più violenti mai pubblicati, dai riff oscuri e ossessivi di "Necromancer" dai rudimenti del blastbeat in "Antichrist" fino al contorto riffing di "Warriors Of Death" e alla veemenza della title-track con i rantoli di Max Cavalera sempre in evidenza creando un'atmosfera tetra e malsana.
Negli anni successivi i Sepultura diventeranno una delle band più famose del metal in tutto il mondo grazie a dischi strepitosi come "Morbid Visions", "Schizoprenia", "Beneath The Remains" e "Arise", evolvendosi sempre di volta in volta e non perdendo niente della loro rabbia originaria, almeno fino al 93' con la pubblicazione dello sperimentale "Chaos A.D." e nel 96' con "Roots" dove il metal possente e veloce degli anni passati si trasforma in un poco efficace e noioso crossover-metal tribale.
Tuttavia proprio in quegli anni il gruppo riceveva le attenzioni da un pubblico molto più vasto, i Sepultura dopo l'allontanamento di Cavalera continuarono con un nuovo cantante con gli stessi scarsi risultati artistici della seconda metà degli anni 90'. Sicuramente questo EP non sarà granchè tecnicamente ma le sue tracce spazzano via tutto in fatto di potenza, inaugurando gli anni d'oro del metal più bastonante e grezzo.
