"Real Life" rappresenta per i Simple Minds la prova del nove. Infatti, McNeil, dopo il mega tour di "Street Fighting Years", abbandona il gruppo. Il fatto è che a lasciare è stato non solo uno dei fondatori della band scozzese ma uno dei più grandi ed illuminati tastieristi della storia della musica.
Il retro del disco è eloquente, si vedono solo Kerr, Burchill e Gaynor! A coadiuvare il trio vengono chiamati Stephen Lipson, un polistrumentista nonchè produttore già presente in "Street Fighting Years" e Malcom Foster al basso, anche se quest'ultimo è nella band già dal precedente tour.
"Real Life" è un disco che rompe con il passato recente della band, è insomma un disco introspettivo e molto "privato".
La title track è strepitosa; la testiera introduttiva, l'arpeggio e i riff di Burchill, la voce eterea di Kerr e la ritmica suggestiva ne fanno un pezzo eccezionale, che avrebbe meritato di lanciare il disco al posto di "Let There Be Love".
Quanto detto per la title track vale per "See The Lights", altro bellissimo brano pieno di sofferenza musicale.
L'album acquista potenza con "Stand By Love", dove Gaynor e il basso sostengono una canzone che ti scuote dal primo all'ultimo secondo e con "Travelling Man", una canzone superba.
Con "Rivers Of Ice" l'intreccio tastiera/voce fa venire i brividi per la dolcezza di una ballatta perfetta.
