Nel 1982, un giovane virgulto della Ruhr, ammaliato dai suoi idoli sacri (Venom, Motorhead e Tank) e restio a marcire in una miniera di carbone, fonda assieme a un amico il gruppo "Sodom": si tratta rispettivamente di Thomas Such e Frank Testegen. Arruolato il batterista Rainer Focke, il trio può finalmente cominciare la sua attività, improntata a una musica che si ricollega alle loro Muse, ma viene al contempo estremizzata, in nome di un sound grezzo e travolgente che rimarrà una costante del thrash tedesco.
I membri della band non esitano ad assegnarsi nomignoli simpatici e vagamente inquietanti (Such diventa "Angelripper", ossia "squarcia-angeli") e, dopo alcuni cambi nella line up (se ne vanno Focke e Testegen, arrivano Christian "Witchhunter" Dudeck e Josef "Grave Violator" Dominic) e un contratto stipulato con la prestigiosa SPV, i Sodom sono pronti a sfornare il loro primo e storico EP, datato 1984: "Into The Sign Of Evil". Il disco vede Such in veste di bassista e cantante (quasi un omaggio ai suoi tre gruppi ispiratori), Dudeck alla batteria e Dominic alla chitarra.
Nell'intro che dà il nome all'EP, lo squartatore di cherubini ci fa subito sprofondare nel più demoniaco dei gironi infernali con la sua voce malvagia e spettrale; da questo momento in avanti, ci penseranno il profanatore e il cacciatore a dargli manforte, per diciannove minuti di oscura violenza sonora. "Outbreak Of Evil", destinata da subito a diventare un classico, presenta quei tratti che fondono tutte le tracce del disco: un thrash travolgente e minimale in cui traspare l'influenza dei Motorhead e dei Venom, e un'attitudine musicale e delle liriche tali da conferire al lavoro un'atmosfera proto-black; anche per questo, l'EP eserciterà una notevole influenza su molti altri gruppi. La presenza dei Tank si riscontra subito nella traccia "Burst Command 'til War", che verte sul tema della guerra, tanto caro al gruppo di Algy Ward, denunciandola aspramente.
"Sepulchral Voice", "Blasfemer", "Witching Metal", "Burst Command 'til War"... non c'è scampo: l'ascoltatore viene percosso e annichilito ad ogni sporco riff di chitarra. E se a volte troviamo un'oasi silenziosa -quale l'inizio di "Sepulchral Voice"- essa è solo una sadica illusione. I Sodom riescono ad arrivare a tanto anche con pezzi connotati da un'evidente semplicità esecutiva ("Blasphemer") e che si reggono su poche note ("Witching Metal", forse il brano più notevole dell'EP). E questo è tipico dell'elite delle grandi band, a cui i Sodom-col senno di poi-appartengono e alla cui porta cominciano a bussare con "In The Sign Of Evil".
