"Playing With Fire" è stata la mia iniziazione a un viaggio spaziale attraverso il mondo sonoro degli Spacemen 3, e lo considero il loro capolavoro indiscusso, un'opera che si dispiega come un intricato enigma di suoni psichedelici e visioni cosmiche. Quest'esperienza si manifesta come un viaggio onirico, un'odissea sonora che si contorce attraverso le pieghe della realtà, sfidando audacemente le leggi musicali terrene, trascinando l'ascoltatore in un regno lisergico e cosmico che danza al di là dei confini della logica convenzionale. "Playing With Fire" non è soltanto un album; è un'astronave sonora infuocata, un portale verso un'esperienza che si snoda in un vortice di percezioni sonore distorte.
L'effetto ipnotico della musica si manifesta come il fluttuare senza peso sotto l'effetto di sostanze psichedeliche, una sensazione che si insinua sin dalla traccia inaugurale, "Honey". Le note si intrecciano in un caleidoscopio di suoni, un ritmo lento scandito da organo, chitarra acustica e basso, mentre la voce psichedelica avvolge l'ascoltatore, trascinandolo in un turbine di suggestioni sonore che si dissolvono nelle pieghe del cosmo.
"Come Down Softly to My Soul" una melodia rilassata ma distorta, dove tasti, chitarra e basso danzano in un balletto celestiale. Le voci riservate fluttuano come echi spaziali, tessendo un'atmosfera ipnotica che invita l'ascoltatore a tuffarsi in profondità nella dimensione contorta degli Spacemen 3.
"How Does It Feel?" apre le porte a un'esperienza quasi trascendentale, incarnando l'essenza del loro linguaggio minimale portato poi alle estreme conseguenze con il live "Dreamweapon". Parole recitate, linee di chitarra che si contorcono e voci che si alternano in un caleidoscopio sonoro, conducono a un crescendo emotivo, amplificato dalla batteria che irrompe sulla scena, trasportando l'ascoltatore in una dimensione ancora più distorta e labirintica. La versione live che si trova nella ristampa in cd è ancora più ipnotica nel suo minimalismo elettrico.
"I Believe It" emerge con l'organo in primo piano, accompagnato da voci spaziali che contribuiscono a creare una densità sonora unica, mentre "Revolution" è una traccia dirompente, un'esplosione sonora che richiama lo spirito degli Stooges e degli MC5. Le chitarre fiammeggianti si fondono con una batteria potente, culminando in un assalto sonoro che travolge l'ascoltatore in un turbinio di emozioni al limite dell'incognita.
"Let Me Down Gently" addolcisce l'atmosfera, tornando a toni più lievi con organo, basso e voci cantate dolcemente in una danza psichedelica che carezza l'ascoltatore in modo distorto e surreale.
"So Hot (Wash Away All of My Tears)" si concentra sulla fragilità della voce, mentre "Suicide" si presenta come un potente muro di suono, un chiaro omaggio al caos controllato del duo Alan Vega e Martin Rev. La traccia conclusiva, "Lord Can You Hear Me?", è un gospel siderale suonato da Jason Pierce, un inno che anticipa gli Spiritualized e si dissolve in un vortice di echi distorti.
"Playing With Fire" degli Spacemen 3 è più di un album; è una follia allucinante che abbraccia l'infinito cosmico, sfidando la razionalità e conducendo l'ascoltatore attraverso un viaggio vertiginoso attraverso le galassie della psiche. Grazie al loro approccio allucinato, gli Spacemen 3 hanno plasmato un'opera che persiste come un sogno psichedelico senza tempo, un'odissea sonora che continua a danzare tra le stelle della mente.
