Giocando con il fuoco: è quello che hanno da sempre fatto i tre omini dello spazio. Prendendo spunto dal noise-pop di Jesus And Mary Chain, i nostri hanno coniato un loro personalissimo linguaggio, fatto di impenetrabili muri chitarristici, suoni fluttuanti, canzoni di due o tre accordi ripetuti all'infinito.
Arrivare alla trance mistica per mezzo del rumore: questa è stata la loro missione. "Playing With Fire" è probabilmente il loro capolavoro, l'album che ha consacrato definitivamente il loro stile. L'iniziale "Honey", una serenata psichedelica dolcissima ma al tempo stesso distorta, rapisce subito l'ascoltatore in un mondo parallelo, visionario, immerso in un sogno. Si prosegue con "Come Down Softly To My Soul", un delicato giro di chitarra riverberato, accompagnato da un leggero bisbiglio; "How Does It Feel" è trance pura; "I Believe It", ovvero la luce del paradiso vista da un eroinomane completamente fatto: un gospel al ralenti, per intenderci; "Revolution", il brano più violento e rumoroso, come promette il nome: passo garage ed esplosione finale; "Let Me Down Gently": qui siamo al minimalismo totale: l'atmosfera è sinistra, accompagnata da un basso annoiato e un organo da chiesa, la musica si dipana in un flusso di coscienza fino alla catarsi finale, senza però esplodere mai. "So Hot", il pezzo più breve costruito su due soli accordi, fa venire in mente certo folk psichedelico degli anni 60; "Suicide": undici minuti di delirio, di muri chitarristici che fanno venire in mente degli MC5 narcotizzati, finalmente qui è il rumore a farla da padrona, la chitarra dialoga infuocata con un organo sussultante. Si chiude con la tenerissima preghiera di "Lord Can You Hear Me?", un semplice giro di chitarra e un coretto gospel di fattoni a invocare il Signore.
E se ci fosse un Signore, non potrà restare indifferente dinanzi tanta bellezza.
