Stealers Wheel: Stuck in the middle with you.
Nonostante i Gretest Hits non mi abbiano mai entusiasmato, con questo CD comprato per pochi euro mi sono dovuto ricredere.
E' uno di quei pochissimi dischi della mia collezione che non invecchia mai; sa mantenersi costantemente leggero ma non per questo superficiale, orecchiabile ma mai banale, anzi sfila via fresco e genuino ed è adatto per ogni stagione ed ogni età. Sono sempre stato restio ai quei dischi o generi "un pò per tutti" ma ecco, qui ci troviamo di fronte a un'opera che a mio avviso saprebbe accontentare e unire palati e gusti più diversi.
Gli Stealers Wheel si formarono in Scozia nel 1973 dalle ceneri di un trio di intrattenitori, più che musicisti, gli Humblebums. I componenti erano Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty e Tam Harver, i quali erano abili a far divertire il pubblico dei pub con spettacolini acustici suonati con chitarre e banjo. Un loro "best" può valere più di un ascolto per gli amanti del genere.
Il gruppo si sciolse nel 1970 e due anni dopo Rafferty tentò la fortuna solista con il misconosciuto quanto bellissimo "Can I have my money back", dove già si comincia a delineare lo stile dei futuri Stealers Wheel. Ma la fortuna in termini sia di successo che di vendite non fu dalla sua e così, riunito un suo ex compagno di scuola, Joe Egan dette vita a un vero gruppo e nel 1972 vide la luce il loro primo disco "Stealers Wheel". Dal '72 al 75 escono tre dischi, uno più bello dell'altro, che fra l'altro saranno gli unici tre del gruppo, prima dello scioglimento, dopo il quale la band cadde nell'oblio più totale. Un peccato perché quei tre dischi sono lavori notevoli. Tra tutte le canzoni non può non risaltare la loro unica che riscosse un certo successo, la meteora "Stuck in the middle with you" simpatico motivetto folk/rock/blues che tanti conosceranno ma di cui pochissimi conosceranno gli autori.
In questo greatest segnalo ancora tre perle che non dovrebbero mancare in nessuna discografia di ogni amante della buona musica: la meravigliosa "Star", l'ironica e sonnacchiosa "Late Again" e soprattutto il gioiello "Nothing's gonna change my mind", vero e proprio inno al pensare sempre di testa propria e al non volersi per forza lasciare condizionare dagli altri. Tutte presenti nella raccolta, ovviamente.
Gli Stealers Wheel seppero dunque creare uno stile originale combinando country pop e rock con contaminazioni folk e blues senza mai cadere nella banalità, anzi evidenziando un lato intimo a tratti ironico e un pò sguaiato, a tratti delicato e suadente. Ancor oggi, a più di 35 anni di distanza, i loro arrangiamenti e le loro armonie restano validissime e attuali, e i loro dischi purtroppo, ancora colpevolmente ignorati. Le voci di Egan e Rafferty poi sono a mio avviso tra le più belle che i seventies abbiano mai partorito, roba da far invidia a tanti gruppi ben più famosi e osannati. Un vero peccato il costante disinteresse di pubblico e critica. Ma si sa nella musica come nella vita vengono spesso incensati i peggiori e fintanto che durerà l'egemonia del più famoso e del più raccomandato, dovremo subire in silenzio cercando scampoli di genio e originalità altrove.
