Se qualcuno credeva che Stevie Wonder dopo avere plasmato una pietra miliare della musica moderna come "Songs in the Key of Life", non avrebbe più raggiunto vette cosi alte si sbagliava di grosso.
Dopo una parentesi alquanto originale, bizzarra ma comunque interessante del 1979 con "Journey trough the Secret Life of Plants", Stevie torna nel 1980 con il monumentale "Hotter than July".
L'album contiene alcune fra le canzoni più belle dell'artista. Spicca fra queste la splendida "Lately", ballata in cui fa tutto Stevie (piano, basso e voce), con acrobazie vocali conclusive da pelle d'oca. Oppure il raggae-soul di "Master Blaster (Jammin')", incalzante e trascinante, dedicato per l'appunto a Bob Marley. O ancora l'ultima canzone "Happy Birthday", scritta per Martin Luther King, splendida! Fra le altre sono da ricordare: "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me", "All I Do", "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It", e la meravigliosa musica in bilico fra il romantico e il misterioso della dark-love-song "Rocket Love".
In copertina Stevie è sudato, e all'interno del book il suo piano prende fuoco, ci scalda davvero il cuore questo album che per l'appunto è "Più caldo di Luglio"!
