Dall'inizio degli anni '80 Stevie Wonder ha indubbiamente virato la sua musica verso un genere meno 'soul' e più 'pop'. Anche le sonortà sono differenti rispetto agli album del decennio precedente. Ascoltando "In Square Circle" la differenza si sente eccome rispetto ai lavori di Stevie anni '70. Questo non è per forza un punto di debolezza, è il segno di uno stile che si è fisiologicamente modificato.
Questo album arriva nel 1985, cioè un anno dopo il clamoroso successo della colonna sonora di "La Signora in Rosso", che con la canzone ormai diventata una delle piu famose dello scorso secolo "I Just Called To Say I Love You" gli regalò un Oscar. Impossibile bissare il successo di vendite del lavoro precedente. "In Square Circle" è un album divertente dall'ascolto facile che contiene 10 pezzi, tutti molto orecchiabili. Il primo è "Part-time Lover" una canzone ritmatissima una delle più riuscite dell'album. Ancora degne di nota: la splendida ballata di "Overjoyed", "Spiritual Walkers" dal ritmo veloce, e la bellissima "Land of LA LA" con testo sul mondo della musica. Non c'è da arrampicarsi sugli specchi cercando uno spessore musicale elevatissimo, che a differenza di altri album qui non c'è, rimane comunque un album godibilissimo da ascoltare anche al primo ascolto.
