PREFAZIONE: Gli 'Story Of The Year' rappresentano una frontiera alternativa al classico nu-metal. Per chi non li conoscesse non sarà molto semplice descriverne le caratteristiche. La stampa li classifica come l'ennesima nu-metal band stile Linkin Park, non sono daccordo con questa classificazione (probabilmente le riviste si sono lasciate influenzare dal tour che vide proprio gli Story fare da spalla ai Linkin Park).
Entriamo nel vivo della descrizione; "In The Wake Of Determination" è il secondo lavoro della band di St. Louis dopo "Page Avenue".

L'album inizia con i pezzi sopraindicati che secondo me sono i migliori dell'album, "We Don't Care Anymore" gode di una ritmica complessa ma facilmente percettibile anche al primo ascolto. Il testo è molto duro e parla di una notte passata nel duro mondo delle battaglie notturne. Decisamente più emozionante il testo di "Take me Back" in cui il Dan Marsala (il songwriter) chiede disperatamente di essere portato indietro nel tempo (Take me Back). La chitarra è l'aspetto dominante dell'intro, poi si lascia spazio alla voce graffiante di Marsala e quindi ad un ritornello decisamente orecchiabile (non a caso questo è il primo singolo estratto dall'album). Ottime le pause di tempo condite con "schitarrate" di buon livello. Il pezzo si chiude come già detto prima con le grida disperate di Marsala (take me back, take me back...) che chiede di essere portato indietro nel tempo. Finale denso e melodico con uso del pianoforte.

Il terzo pezzo dell'album è "Our Time Is Now", è un pò più difficile capirne la struttura, perchè si tratta di una canzone piuttosto aritmica, da sottolineare la pessima figura del cantante durante le grida, cerca di imitare il Chester Bennington dei Linkin Park (anche da qui partono le analogie) e il tanto osannato ed ammirato Chris Cornell. Per il resto buon finale di batteria e come nei pezzi precedenti ritornello orecchiabile. Parte leggera "Taste The Poison" per poi essere condita da pesanti riff e da chitarre stile punk-rock. Il testo è piuttosto riflessivo come quello di "Take Me Back" ma l'ascoltatore capisce che c'è qualcosa che sta cambiando, è pronta per essere presentata la seconda parte dell'album.
UN RITORNO AL PASSATO: >>STEREO<<, >>FIVE AGAINST THE WORLD<< e >>SLEEP<<;
Per chi non li conoscesse gli Story si sono conquistati un posto importante nella scena nu-metal americana grazie a "And The Hero Will Drown" del 2002 (primo singolo). "STEREO" sembra essere la seconda parte del tanto famigerato primo singolo della band. Suono duro, batteria prepotente e urla questa volta un pò più sensate nel finale. Un pezzo non male. "FIVE AGAINST THE WORLD" presenta una ritmica irregolare proprio come la precedente "Our Time Is Now" ma qui parliamo di una canzone con un testo un pò filosofico (si parla del tempo in cui verranno ricordati, del tempo in cui loro non dimenticheranno, insomma un discorso un pò da "strizzacervelli"). Spettacolare l'assolo di chitarra, discreto il finale, un misto tra urla e batteria. "SLEEP" è una canzone che secondo me non merita un approfondimento particolare perchè vuole trascinare l'ascoltatore in un clima di tranquillità quasi per convincerlo che l'album non è solo chitarre, basso e grida, insomma un tentativo non riuscito di fare del soft-rock. Troppo simile a "Take Me Back".
PARTE CENTRALE "FORZATA": TROPPO CAOS E TESTI DA CENSURA;
A mio avviso la parte centrale dell'album rappresenta il primo segnale di un calo inevitabile di un album comunque di buon livello. "MEATHEAD" e "MARCH OF THE DEAD" rappresentano il disperato tentativo di allungare un CD che sembra essere già arrivato alla fine (ma non sarà così). Ancora una volta Take Me Back rapresenta "il punto di riferimento" per poter continuare su discreti livelli. I testi sono un misto tra "explicit lyrics" e violenza gratuita, ma niente di particolare. >>SUE YOUR FRIENDS, PAY YOUR ENEMY<>WAKE UP THE VOICELESS<< "Fatevi sentire" sembra questo l'appello disperato di Dan Marsala, intento a far convincere chi ascolta ad iniziare una guerriglia contro l'uniformità. Più che la melodia, convince appunto il testo.
FINALE A BOCCA ASCIUTTA: >>IS THIS MI FATE?HE ASKED THEM<>A SILENT MURDER<<;
Forse azzarda un pò il quintetto di St. Luois, forse pretendono troppo dalle loro buone ma non immense capacità. Ritmo ripetitivo, simile a "Stereo" e base strozzata da una chitarra che non convince. Urla non valutate, diciamo imbarazzanti, stile "mercato". Peggior pezzo dell'album per il recensore. (e non solo) Non si capisce cosa "A Silent Murder" voglia significare, sembra essere il secondo tentativo di una melodia orecchiabile; altro tentativo non riuscito, possiamo liberamente affermare che non sono capaci di fare i bravi ragazzi!
COMMENTO: Nel globale, si può parlare di un buon album che senz'altro ha superato il precedente lavoro. Ciò che stupisce è che a primo ascolto, soprattutto la prima parte dell'album sembra essere un tentativo malriuscito di imitare Linkin Park o i "vecchi" Lostprophets, in realtà gli Story-Year sono una realtà ben affermata e che col tempo si guadagnerà sempre più spazio.
CONSIGLIO: Non li conoscete affatto? "Procuratevi il singolo "And The Hero Will Drown" del 2002, infatti rappresenta lo specchio del sound della band. Se avete il gioco per console "Need For Speed Underground", scorrete le Tracks, troverete questa canzone. (Non è pubblicità occulta al gioco, non lavoro per l'EA!)
Valutazione: tra il 3 e il 4. Vada per le 4 stelle perchè se le meritano.
