La storia del Metal si è sempre caratterizzata per aver regalato ai suoi adepti, a volte inaspettatamente, lavori ben al di là di ogni umana concezione. Così fecero i Black Sabbath con l’omonimo, con paranoid… i Motorhead con Ace of Spades, Overkill… i Metallica, ke nell'ormai lontano '86 regalarono alla storia un disco il cui unico coerente aggettivo è "distruttivo": Master Of Puppets, il disco metal per eccellenza.
Seppure in un ambito molto diverso, questo avvenne anche nel 1997, per opera di 5 ragazzi provenienti dalla scandinavia, madre di tante band a dir poco promettenti: gli Stratovarius, che risvegliarono il (vero) metal da un periodo travagliato con “Visions”, una pietra miliare del power.
Tutto ha inizio con The Kiss Of Judas, canzone in pieno stile del gruppo, con un ritmo molto sostenuto e con ottimi assoli nella sua parte centrale, ed un inizio da schiaffo in faccia: ottima la prova vocale di Timo Kotipelto. Un travolgente giro di clavicembalo ci fa ora tornare in mente le corti barocche del '700, dove i clavicembalisti la fanno da padroni, e dove le melodie si respirano assieme al grande sfarzo dei regnanti: è l’inizio di Black Diamond, la seconda traccia dell’album, nella quale Timo Kotipelto ancora una volta ci delizia con i suoi acuti, e Timo Tolkki e Jens Johansson, circa a metà della traccia attaccano con un duetto dei loro, assolutamente disarmante per chiunque volesse anche lontanamente provare ad imitarli. Sui canoni e nel perfetto stile degli Stratovarius è la successiva Forever Free che alterna momenti più veloci e ritmati alla classica melodia tipica del gruppo. Anche qui creano grande atmosfera i ritornelli, grazie alla sovrapposizione dei cori alla voce di Kotipelto. Lenta e dolce (forse troppo) è invece la quarta Before the Winter il cui testo si riallaccia anche alla nona Coming Home, entrambe scritte interamente da Tolkki e ci parlano ambedue di una storia d'amore e del finale ritorno a casa dall'amata. Giungiamo ora a Legions, dove è chiaro il riferimento ai fans della band, “Legions Of Twilight”. Traccia veloce e aggressiva, impreziosita dai classici cori dei ritornelli. Dopo aver viaggiato sospesi nel vuoto per le surreali atmosfere di The Abyss Of Your Eyes ci troviamo di fronte ad una vera e propria devastazione tecnica: Holy Light. L'ultima instrumental scritta dalla band ke racchiude in se tutto il genio di Timo Tolkki, la sua grandissima abilità, l'inestimabile propensione melodica, accompagnato in maniera impeccabile da Jens Johansson; ottima anche la prova del bassista Jari Kainulainen. Chiudono l’album Paradise, capolavoro e colonna portante dei concerti della band scandinava, inno alla natura e alla follia distruttiva dell'uomo, e quella Coming Home, degna erede di Forever, che vede il duo Tolkki-Kotipelto ancora una volta impegnato a tirar fuori da dentro di sè tutta l'atmosfera, la malinconia palpabile che rende questa canzone assolutamente stupenda. La melodia iniziale di chitarra trascina l'ascoltatore via da tutto e lo proietta nella dimensione della canzone, che prosegue con i soliti, grandiosi ritornelli con la sovrapposizione delle voci, che danno al tutto un tocco di estrema bellezza. Ma la degna conclusione arriva con la title-track, Visions, che ci parla delle centurie di Nostradamus a cui è ispirata la copertina dell’album. Ci presenta un testo molto vario, ke contiene alcuni pezzi parlati in cui vengono letti dei brani dalle centurie, accompagnati dalla musica ke segue il passo continuando a cambiare lungo tutto l'arco del pezzo, con una prima parte veloce e frenetica che scema in una seconda via via più calma. Si arriva così al maestoso finale, un unico immenso coro emozionante per la sua regalità, in linea con la magia dell'intero album.
È insieme a Episode il disco migliore del gruppo, ke raggiunge la maturità artistica e diventa un punto di riferimento per chiunque voglia cominciare a masticare musica del genere. Non può mancare nella collezione di un buon metallaro.
