"A New Morning" è il capitolo finale (escludendo il best "Singles") dei Suede, pubblicato nel 2002.
Alle tastiere c'è una novità: il bravo Neil Codling (tra l'altro co-autore di vecchie hits come "She's In Fashion" e "Can't Get Enough", oltrechè unico autore di "Elephant Man", pezzo contenuto in "Head Music" del 1999) viene sostituito da Alex Lee, ex-Strangelove (nel biennio 2006-2007 ha inoltre partecipato come chitarrista ai live shows dei Placebo).
"A New Morning" è il successore di "Head Music", ma del predecessore ha poco o nulla. Nel nuovo lavoro, i Suede cercano di sviluppare in maniera più approfondita l'aspetto acustico del loro stile musicale; va interpretata in tal senso la scelta di cambiare produttore, ed affidarsi alle esperte mani di Stephen Street (coadiuvato da John Leckie e David Eringa).
"Positivity" è il primo estratto dall'album (tra i crediti del pezzo figura anche Codling), ed anticipa efficacemente la svolta della band. Si nota subito l'attitudine acustica del brano, mentre Anderson abbandona il suo tipico cantato"nasale" per prediligere la profondità espressiva di un'esecuzione più "di gola", soprattutto nelle parti alte. Seguono questa rotta diversi pezzi del disco, tra i quali spiccano "Lonely Girls" e "Lost In TV", oltre al capolavoro dell'album, la monumentale "Astrogirl", nella quale Brett sfodera una prova vocale strepitosa ed impreziosita da un celestiale falsetto nel refrain.
I fans dello zoccolo duro, invece, possono rifugiarsi in numeri elettrici come il secondo singolo "Obsessions", "Beautiful Loser" (la più vicina al "Coming Up sound" dell'intera opera), la sfrenata "Streetlife" (forse la cosa più vicina agli Stones che i Suede abbiano mai fatto) e la più cadenzata "You Belong To Me". Nota negativa la produzione di un (insolitamente) poco incisivo Street; va bene semplificare e smussare il sound, ma qua si è forse esagerato, privando i pezzi del classico appeal "esagerato" che rendeva le canzoni dei Suede ricche di varie ed inaspettate sfaccettature. La noia vera, comunque, fa capolino poche volte, forse in "Untitled... Morning" (per eccessiva lungaggine) e nella ghost track "Ocean".
"A New Morning" rappresenta, quindi, una degna conclusione per i Suede. Non è un capolavoro, ma di certo è un disco che ha comunque qualche freccia al proprio arco.
